I love this book very much. I love the cover, particularly the horizontal format back cover,the clear methodical concise but never sterile six part- 18 chapter format with which it is divided. Hell i even love that the publisher is called continuum. It is a revelatory experience to read this tome. You may be an experienced connoisseur, practitioner,curator, student or complete sound art virgin LaBelle will lead you through the soundscape, listening anew to works of great simplicity or complexity with the same deft insights. It is no easy task to write about and describe sound and LaBelle's genius is in making it seem easy by employing perspective. It is not called "Perspectives on Sound Art" for nothing. Sound without a contextual space in which to express itself is like paint bereft of canvas on which to be fixed. It is the reflections on sound art alumni from Schaffer through Cage and Lucier to Fontana that echo in your head long after putting the book down. He talks about the development of sound art through not just the artists and works produced, but by dissecting these in logically grouped contexts of how they inter-relate. The clever grouping of sub-genres or classes of sound art really help in navigating a clear developmental line through the "Background Noise" and the introductions to each part along with the clearly delineated cross referenced notes at the end of each chapter make this an invaluable guide for students and teachers alike.The black and white Photographs / illustrations are both informative and beautiful and really add to the books usefulness. I cannot recommend it enough, if you are interested in Sonic Art this book will engage,inform and enthuse you and its authors spatial thinking will also help you understand how many other forms of contemporary art from installation to performance have been influenced by the men and women who have made the interpretation and application of sound their lives work.

This is an essencial book for anyone interested in sound art, or in installation art as a whole. It is a very well written historical review of sound art, theorically grounded, however using a simple and straight language.

This book has a lot of references to postmodern sound art. I had hoped to model my own piece after the book's descriptions and ended up being rejected by the gallery. This read is for people who really know what the subject entails, not for beginners.

More hippie nonsense

The author of this book, is arrogant, egomaniac, and in love with the sound of his own voice.
His style of writing consists of long strings of run on sentences that almost always end with "in other words..." where he then takes the time to dumb down his speech for the reader. If you're going to do that at the end of almost every sentence, why not write for the everyday man to begin with?
"Sound art" is music. Not a bunch of bohemian hippies who didn't take the time to learn an instrument, banging on pots and pans, or rewiring electronic toys to make shrieks, squeaks, and pops.
This book only further illustrates how far the art world has fallen.
