This CD is the soundtrack to the 1994 movie of the same name, essentially a biopic of the Beatles' pre-fame early days when they were a bunch of leather-clad rockers. The film concentrates on the time the Beatles spent in the seedy German citiy of Hamburg (in particular the relationship between then bassist Stuart Sutcliffe and John Lennon, brillantly played by Ian Hart) and when their repertoitre consisted mostly of cover versions of American rock n roll and R&B tunes, which is what we get here. Just as the actors in the film don't really look that much like the Beatles, the music here is not really an accurate representation of the early sound of the Beatles although I don't think the producers of the film were really looking for that. Having said that, the musicianship is excellent and the raw energy of these songs is perfectly captured by the Backbeat Band - a collaboration of contemporary rock and grunge musicians, such as Mike Mills (REM) and Dave Grohl (Nirvana). Listening to this CD, you can almost smell the stench of those sweaty, seedy Hamburg clubs where the Beatles learned their craft. A worthwhile purchase.

Beware: it's short. 25 July 2001

If you're looking for a lot of music for your dollar, don't go here because it's not very long. I got an evil look from the snooty indie record store guy when I asked if they had this album; for a Beatle purist it's most likely blasphemy.
However, for someone who likes the Afghan Whigs, Soul Asylum or Foo Fighters, this is like watching Greg Dulli, Dave Pyrner, Dave Grohl, and the others spend a night in a small club playing Beatles covers. It speeds up and rocks old American R&B tunes that the Beatles were covering themselves back in Hamburg.
It may not have the depth the original Beatles eventually acquired, but it rocks like the Beatles never did.

Good CD, Not a Lot of Bang for the Buck 25 April 2004

A great little rock album, literally. It takes contemporary rockers from alt-rock bands, tosses in some classic R&B staples, burns them onto a disc (or vinyl, whatever) and Backbeat is the result. It is incredibly short and it's best to look for this cd in the used section of the store. I got it here on amazon.com for 75 cents, making it well-worth the buy. However, if you pay list price, it's a ripoff. It's not necessarily for a Beatles enthusist, but is a great listen for anyone who likes alt-rock and classic rock.
For intense covers of early rock music, Backbeat can't be beat! 19 July 2013

I happened upon this 1990s CD in a box of older stuff, and broke out in a big smile when I saw it. It's *insane* that this CD has been so overlooked. I suppose it's because the CD clocks in at right around a half-hour, so, as other Amazon reviewers have suggested, some people might feel shortchanged in terms of total music time.

But let's pay less attention to quantity and more to quality. There are 12 classic-rock songs on this CD -- covers of early Beatles covers, essentially -- and on at least half you've never heard more rocking, intense, brilliantly executed versions. It's all, at least, very good, and some of it reaches heights that will shock you. So, yes, Good Golly Miss Molly clocks in at just 1:48; why would anyone complain about that when just listening to this version leaves you absolutely breathless?

Don Was gets production props for this music, performed by Greg Dulli, Don Fleming, Dave Grohl, Mike Mills, Thurston Moore, and Dave Pirner.

Right now I'm cycling through a fast five-song cycle: Twist and Shout; C'mon Everybody; Rock 'n' Roll Music; Good Golly Miss Molly; and 20 Flight Rock. My son is 12 years old, I'm 45, and neither of us can stop listening to this set.

It's a great CD. Buy it, play the set I suggested, then listen to the album straight through, and what can I say except that you'll be very, very, very happy.
