The album was recorded at four different recording studios with six different record producers, which makes for a varied album although, for the most part, it hangs together quite well. If you think that one or two songs sound as if they don't really belong, you know why. Among the producers, Don Cook was responsible for two tracks while John Farrar, Tony Brown and Gary Burr each produced two tracks. Chris Ferrer and David Foster both produced one track, the latter being responsible for the new version of I honestly love you.
There are plenty of great songs here although if I have to pich out highlights, I'll go for Precious love, Love is a gift, Don't say love and Back with a heart. This album will probably appeal more to those fans who (like me) prefer Olivia's early recordings than to those who like her best for Grease and Physical. While this is not as obviously country as Olivia's early recordings, it clearly falls within the ambit of contemporary country music.
'Back With A Heart', though, is a very good album. Well up there with the best of her 70's stuff.
Olivia co-wrote 10 of these tracks and you'll be pleased to hear the songs are free of the cloying psycho-babble that dogged her previous album, 'Gaia'. For the most part these are love (well, lost love) songs which have always been her forte.
Highlights are the rocky title track, the sweet pop of 'I Don't Want To Say Goodnight' and the 2 John Farrar songs, 'Closer To Me' and 'Under My Skin'. In truth though, only 'Don't Say That' is a bit of a let-down, being very bland and much too long too.
Definitely the best album Olivia has made for 15 years, 'Back With A Heart' is well worth reappraisal in 2002.
