4.0 out of 5 stars great early work 18 Aug 2010

wanna know about new york city in the 1930's and 40's??
joe liebling shows you round the streets, the housing blocks, the river docks and the race courses and little emporiums that made NYC a work of modern art in those years.
prose stylist to rival any of the new york giants, this collection of joe's early newspaper articles teems with the life of that extraordinary city. and he makes it (the writing) all seem soooo easy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Broadway storekeeper 18 Dec 2000
By Gary Britson - Published on Amazon.com
Two stories in this book--Broadway Storekeeper and Tummler--are among the best pieces of reportage I have ever read. They offer everything modern journalism lacks--taste, gentle humor, appreciation instead of scorn for the unusual, and a broad, affectionate view of the world. The whole book is a pleasure, but these two stories should be in every anthology of American reporting. Liebling was one of a kind.

5.0 out of 5 stars NY Underbelly 14 July 2008
By bassoonmuse - Published on Amazon.com
I am a sucker for NYC history and the great Leibling serves it up on a silver platter here. The offbeat and oddities that he finds so fascinating remind us of another time. The only thing better is when he recalls Parisian meals from the 20's.

5.0 out of 5 stars A J Liebling and New York 12 Oct 2010
By Stanley Michelson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Liebling lovers will appreciate this selection of pieces about NYC in the thirties. He knows his city and its grifters, jockeys, hustlers. He knows them, loves them and was able to write about them as no one else has done before or since.
