Product Description

Book Description
The adventures in time and space continue, as the Doctor and his faithful companion Rose Tyler travel time and space fighting evil, righting wrongs and saving the course of history.

This is the ultimate guide to the newest adventures of the Doctor: an archive of information, review and commentary, from the press to the production to the fans, as the venerable Time Lord returns to television in 2005 in a thirteen-part series that stunned viewers and critics alike.

Back to the Vortex unfolds as history happened, from the announcements to the press releases, casting calls, the highs and lows, and the start of production.

Discover the background to the new series, through the eyes of the press, the commentators and fans; read about the casting of Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and one-time pop princess Billie Piper as Rose; and be there during the lead-up to the return of the traveling Time Lord to regular prime time television after sixteen years away.

And as the show debuts, investigate the stories themselves, through detailed analysis, facts and figures, as well as extensive reviews and commentary with a panel of fans and aficionados spread across the world.

This is the essential guide to the long awaited and anticipated return of the Doctor... and it's about time!

Features an afterword by Rob Shearman, author of the episode "Dalek".

From the Author
Contrary to comments made by a particular reviewer of my book on Amazon, the written contents of "Back To The Vortex" are available nowhere else online. The book has 436 pages of review and analysis and a twelve-chapter narrative that has never been in print before now.

5.0 out of 5 stars the definitive guide to the new series, 9 Oct 2005
Back to the vortex is the nearest you'll ever get to an ultimate guide to the 2005 series of Doctor Who. True, it isn't as lavishly illustrated as the official books, but it tells the full story in a highly entertaining way.

The first section is an account of the journey that led to the TV series being made. This section is the better of the two, taking you on an exciting ride through the production and, particularly, the reaction from the public, the press, and the fans from before the series was announced right through to the end of the show. And, though I had a few minor niggles, I doubt anybody could have written it better.

The second section is the most complete episode guide you'll ever see to the series. Each episode has been analysed from every conceivable angle. You won't find any guide in another book or online that even comes close to this in terms of detail or rigour.

If you only buy one book about the new series, make it this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Never mind the cover, feel the quality..., 24 Oct 2005
Telos have previously published two books - the Companion and the Handbook - which provide an in-depth guide to the making and reception of Dr Who 1963-1996. This book performs both tasks for the 2005 season, and includes much more critical analysis than in the previous books. To be honest, the plot synopses will not help you much if you haven't seen the series, but the critical depth of analysis by Lyons is impressive. Getting perspectives from different reviewers is also a nice touch, though there is some consensus about the season (for the record: Russell Davis does jokes and characters, but not plots; Billie Piper was great; Eccles was good but under-used; the Slitheen were awful and the guest writers provided the best stories). Despite the cover - which is awful - this isn't a thrown-together fan-publication. Nor is it a lavish pictures and little-depth BBC publication. Taking this into account, it is seriously recommended for all those who have been sucked into the world of Who...

5.0 out of 5 stars Back in Time, 21 Jan 2009
By Paul D "Paul" (Darwen, Lancashire) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Lyon and Telos have done a sterling job of gathering in one handy reference work a large amount of information about Doctor Who. Ranging from the initial run up to the first new series in 2005, covering each episode in obsessive detail, and going on to document the reception of the program in the media and within fandom in general, Lyon charts the astonishing success story that is the new Doctor Who. The book also includes a number of full-colour photographs. In all, this is a splendid look at the first series of new Doctor Who, with well-filled pages and a pleasing lay-out. A far cry from the skimpy, rapidly-produced episode guides of old.
