2.0 out of 5 stars Great performance, bootleg sound quality 16 Nov 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'd be amazed if Leonard has sanctioned this release. Okay, 1988 was a great revival for Leonard - I remember the tour, I was there all 3 nights at the Albert Hall in London - but this recording is only bootleg sound quality and I'm really disappointed.

Seriously, it sounds as though it was recorded on a Walkman by someone in row 12.

I think this is about the 4th live album Leonard has released in the last few years and I'm delighted with the others (London, Isle of Wight, The Road). But this feels like someone is really milking it.

For a terrific live album from this era try Cohen Live. And don't bother with this. I'm sending it back.

2.0 out of 5 stars Buy "Live in Concert" instead 1 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
This radio show CD was recorded shortly after the 1988 tracks featured on the excellent "Live in Concert" CD and uses the same musicians and backing singers. Unfortunately, the recording is just not of the same fidelity. It sounds as through the radio company streamed the live transmission and has simply reproduced it years later for this CD. The microphone popping and muddy producton, which might not have mattered so much for analogue radio are a real distraction.

To check, I listened to Joan of Arc on both this CD and "Live in Concert. The latter has much the better sound definition. As a Cohen enthusiast, I will probably hang onto "Back in the Motherland" rather than return it because, with the exception of Joan of Arc the 1988 song selections are different. However, I suspect it will not be much listened to. For me was the highlight was the maudlin version of Take this Waltz, which seemed more in keeping with the lyrics than the original (jauntier) studio version.

In the meantime "Live in Concert" can still be bought for 2.99 on Amazon, which makes this CD seem like a right old rip off.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only for the avid fan 1 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
1988 was a great tour, and its nice to have a recording of a part of it. However, this is not an "official" release - its just someone jumping on Cohen's current popularity. The selection of songs isn't fantastic and as other reviewers have noted, the sound quality is poor - even for a live album - particularly at the start of the album.
All in all, I'd only buy this if you are a dedicated fan/collector who just wants it because its one you don't have in your collection.

This CD has two sides, so to speak.

On the bright side, its sound quality is much better than some reviewers make it out to be (in my humble opinion). Granted, it is not exactly high-fidelity (muddy stereo image, somewhat deficient bass and treble), but not very lo-fi either; I've heard bootlegs (see below) sounding much, much worse.

Artistically, it contains some interesting variations of well-known songs, along with renditions we already know from better recordings. Mr. Cohen is audibly a bit hoarse on some tracks, but gives a lively performance, vigorously backed by supporting singers and band. Hence my rating of four stars. In other words, not merely for completists.

On the dark side, it is doubtful that Mr.Cohen receives his due rewards for this performance... Officially, this CD is probably a legal edition--apparently, in the UK broadcasts from Canada of this period are in the public domain --but in my book, it is still a bootleg (which may readily be found on the Internet, by the way). Significantly, the sole copyright notice pertains just to the "package and artwork", not the music...

3.0 out of 5 stars Worthy but not great 18 Jun 2013
By Stephen Reid TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Leonard Cohen is like a fine wine - he gets better with age. I have the pleasure of owning the Live in London recording and that is simply wonderful. 'Back int he Motherland' is a recording from two decades before and it compares unfavourably. Admittedly the London show was magical and anything will struggle by comparison, but there's no getting away from the comparison.

That doesn't make this a bad record: the one and two star reviews are harsh, in my opinion. It's just that there's a benchmark available and, compared with what was to come, this is the lesser of the two offerings.

Leonard Cohen has developed a style that is relaxed, laid-back and supremely understated. He was not quite there when he recorded this set. the musical arrangements (or the sound balance) should have Cohen's voice to the fore and the background vocals adding a softening edge. At times, though, it seems as if he is competing with the background vocals. On some of the songs one gets the feeling that he is having to try too hard and needs to let the beautiful melodies and words speak for themselves. It's not helped by the fact that the recording quality is not a match for modern-day standards.

If you are a Leonard Cohen completist, get this. There's a lot of good here. If you're not, go for the London recording. I find this CD worthy but not great: three stars for this one.
