Book Description

29 Sep 2013
The day that Seth vanished, Isla remained inside the house they had shared for over six years and didn’t leave it for nine days. She didn’t speak to anyone until the fourth, when she rang the local police to report him as missing. When Isla – sole owner and occupier of 3 Archer’s Avenue – finds herself the victim of familial betrayal, she is forced to leave her home behind. However, circumstances lead her back and she finds herself reluctantly returning as a tenant. She is joined by three others: Callum, Marion and Luke. Callum is a young factory worker who is in dangerously deep with a man from his childhood. Marion is shy and anorexic, plagued by voices in her head. Luke is a violent thug with an obsessive, compulsive disorder. There is also Paul – a lost, forlorn sceptre who resides in the attic. Like Isla, Callum, Luke and Paul each have a history with the house. Further, these individual histories link them to each other and, as each story unfolds, we discover just how deep the dark, sinister network of their connections run… There is one final twist revealed at the close of the book – Paul, the lost soul, residing in the attic, is not the only ghost amongst the characters… Back to the Old House is a story of connections: of lives entangled in a small world, where lost souls lurk on stairwells, their silence the soundtrack to disturbed childhoods and deep, irreversible regrets.

5.0 out of 5 stars another gem. 30 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
this author is fast becoming one of my favourites. having read his previous two books i was really looking forward to starting this one. i wasn't disappointed. it had me gripped from the beginning.four people share a house.or should i say five as the attic is occupied by a ghost. each of the characters all have their own stories and troubled past lives and are all linked to the house in some way. as the book developed i found myself avidly turning the pages to find out what happens to them. i loved the clever way that all the characters were connected without realising it. there is a very dark side to the background of the book, but it is dealt with brilliantly. if you have read any other books by Guy A Johnson, you will love this one. i spent many lunch breaks with one eye on the clock, desperate to finish a chapter before returning to work!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed 22 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I've read Guy's other books and I've been impressed by how quickly I've become absorbed in the plot but more so, in the characters. Indeed, character development is one of Guy's strengths (as well as concocting a ripping yarn!), shame too many authors neglect this in favour of shocks these days.
I won't give the plot away, but I was hooked from the start - a real page turner. Look forward to reading more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great page-turner from Guy Johnson! 7 Nov 2013

Thoroughly enjoyed this. I had read Guy Johnson's first two novels after downloading them for free during Amazon promotions. They were brilliant and left me wanting more so no way was I going to wait for a promotion for this one!

Like his other novels, there is a strong storyline and well defined and engaging characters. These characters and their personal stories are all linked together in one way or another but it is done effortlessly so nothing feels contrived. Johnson is especially good at dealing with difficult subjects and themes; this books has so many layers...it is a mystery novel with many twists and turns, but also covers such themes as loss, regret, desertion, sorrow...in fact the whole human condition. I highly recommend it (and am not going to give any of the plot away)!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really loved this 11 Mar 2014

Unusual, haunting sort of book. When you first start to read, you think "oh here we go again, I know this script" - but you don't. Nobody is quite what they seem, they all come together with links to the house, and then, as their stories unfold, the various twists and turns take you along.
In some ways it finished a bit too quickly, there were some lose ends that could have been tied up, but otherwise would recommend it.
