Acclaimed for his fusion of world music and cutting-edge drum & bass, Talvin Singh's contribution to the Back to Mine series is a fantastic selection of downbeat dance music with a contemporary edge. Opening with the beautiful "Weather Storm" by Craig Armstrong, which may sound familiar to fans of Massive Attack or anyone who bought Dave Seaman's Back to Mine some time ago. There is nothing straight forward about the music chosen as you would expect from an artist such as Singh as he delves deeply into the archives digging out artists such as the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan whose "Mustt, Mustt" gets a deep down dub reworking from Massive Attack. Unlike many of the previous Back to Mine albums, Singh's has a real consistency throughout with no sudden turns in style or genre as the chilled dub plates that are predominant ease forward gently losing no momentum along the way. --David Trueman

I discovered Nitin Sawney by accident, and Badmarsh & Sri on GLR with Imran Khan one memorable Saturday evening. So I've got a bit of an Eastern love affair thang going on, I'll admit. Talvin Singh however, has got to be the master, as I discovered before getting my sticky mitts on Back To Mine. He melds ambient drum and bass with authentic eastern dubs and creates something wonderful. He demands no less in Back to Mine, creating a wonderful, listenable, any-timeable ambient CD for any company you may happen to be keeping. Unlike other great ambien CDs its also very listenable if you're on your own. It's light, subtle and intelligently put together. Plenty of variation but without the musical tensions between tracks which you get with some of the Back To Mines. If I suspend disbelief for a second I know that Talvin sat in his bedroom taping his fave tracks onto a cassette to give to his best mate. This is mood music at its best, and even if you've only flirted with the Eastern vibe, this cannot fail to be for you and at the very least it'll be a part of your collection that's uncontentious. Have no hesitation in buying it

Not only does Talvin Singh make amazing music, he listens to great stuff as well! Although this album isn't centred around the "culture" theme as much, there is loads to keep you occupied in this compilation. It is geared more towards the chillout side, but I believe that anyone who likes Talvin's work would like listening to this. A quality selection of top tracks: a must-have for any Talvin Singh enthusiat.

This is the best in the series so far. Talvin has mixed a medley of mood enhancing music. The emphasis, not surprisingly, is on The East. However, that does not stop Talvin throwing in African legend Ali Farka Toure or a touch of Brazilian funk, courtesy of dZihan & Kamien. The album reaches a crescendo with the classic remix of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan whose vocals soar majestically. This album is Mustt, Mustt!

I have listened to this in many places and consistently enjoy the music, balance of one track to the next and quality of production. Only skip two tracks in centre. Read more
