Amazon.co.uk Review

Once hailed as "the future of UK garage", MJ Cole has been a little quiet since the release of his debut two years ago. Thankfully Back to Mine have provided a great way for him to ease himself back into the spotlight with a great collection of 15 tracks chosen and mixed by him for their series of downbeat after-hours music. Kicking off with (if kicking is the right word) the incredibly mellow but strangely powerful trip-hop of Lee Curtis' "For Louise", which peters out into a wash of sound before the Cinematic Orchestra creep in with "Diabolus". From then on MJ's mix really starts to weave its magic with every track carefully placed for maximum effect, progressing from trip-hop to hip-hop to reggae and then onto the feistiest track on the album, a Jazzanova remix of Cole's "Sincere". A quick cooling off by way of some Ravel then dim the lights for a few lovin' soul numbers courtesy of Omar (remember him) and the Commodores. Chuck in a bit of Zero 7, a Groove Armada remix and some chilled drum & bass from Bukem then wallop, you're all invited back to his. The only oddity that should be mentioned is the lack of any two-step or garage, the nearest moment being Cole's mix of Goldie's "I Believe" towards the end, but even if you're a fan of Cole for his own work every track is still a gem, making this a very worthy addition to the Back to Mine series.--David Trueman

As a big fan of the "Back to Mine" series, I count this as one of the best of the nine released to date -- soulful, eclectic, original, well-conceptualized and beautifully mixed. There is not a bad track on the entire CD and the mix is seamless from start to finish. In fact, MJ Cole has a very original approach to arranging the music -- he fuses songs that seem at first to be wildly at odds. But it gives depth and nuance to the mix and makes the pieces feel all but made for each other.

The "Back to Mine" mixes (like their "Another Late Night" counterparts) bear the imprint of the artists who put them together. If you like Groove Armada, you'll love their contribution to the series. The same can be said for Everything But the Girl. If you like the Tracy Thorn & Ben Watt groove, you'll love their "Back to Mine" CD (I think it's the best in the series). But strangely, MJ Cole's contribution doesn't have the same "sound" as his own stuff. As such, this CD is something of a wild card. Still, after listening to this album non-stop over the last few weeks and months, I find that it just gets better and better. A real gem.

Outkast track is the bomb, most of this is just great. I mean there is a bit of love in this recording. It takes things pretty far out with the inclusion of Ravel, but the whole thing is lean and tight and plays brilliantly throughout. Good stuff.

This mix is my first outing in the back to mine series so i can't compare it to the others, but I reckon its totally excellent. This is partly because it is relatively diverse in that it moves from genre to genre, including a brief but worthwile dip into Ravel's String Quartet in F Major. Yet largely, a soulful mood touches through most of the tracks which creates an important element of cohesiveness. Where this mix really stands out is that MJ Cole appears to have stuck pretty rigidly to what he enjoys, some of the tracks are different and somewhat obscure but hes also included 'chill-out' classics too. Fair enough, tracks like Zero Seven's Destiny and LTJ Bukem's Music are not exactly rare sightings on this sort of album, but who cares? Both are truly great tracks. This album may not be the most original mix in the world but that doesn't matter. It's got enough diversity to make it stand out aganist a lot of chill out albums. The end result is 15 top quality tunes that are mixed expertly.
