Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In a market saturated by mix albums of every description, DMC's Back to Mine series glows like a beacon in a fog of mediocrity. The idea is simple: artists are given a free rein to compile a set that's both intuitive and personal to their taste--a mix of post-club textures chiefly designed for horizontal dancing and chilled-out bonhomie. Latest recruits, Everything But the Girl, take to the idea like ducks to water, displaying a musical pedigree that's latterly embraced house, hip-hop, even drum 'n' bass. Although most people have warmed to the group's shift into dance culture, what will surprise is their sublime choice of tunes. Kicking off with the drum machine jazz of DJ Cam's "Friends and Enemies", the moody hip-hop noir of Deadly Avenger's "Bayou" and their own production on Beth Orton's "Stars All Seem to Weep", the mood is stoner-paced but never drab. Follow this with classy deep house nostalgia, a little stripped back ambience courtesy of Carl Craig and a rousingly sanguine finale featuring Donny Hathaway's "Someday We'll All Be Free", and you have the makings of a fine night in. --Paul Tierney

Gobsmacked... 15 Aug 2001
Format:Audio CD
Being both an ebtg and back to mine series fan for years, I have been stunned by this. I have played it to death both at home and in the car and am still finding new things in each listen. Ben and Tracey have managed to combine cool, chill and occasionally a dash of melancholy yet somehow always provoking a smile.

It is the perfect soundtrack to the current heatwave (together with a long cool beer whilst watching the sun go down)

I know this will be a long term favourite - quite extraordinary.

One of the best 19 Nov 2003
Format:Audio CD
In my opinion this ranks up there with MJ Cole, Groove Armada and Faithless as one of the best albums in the Back to Mine series.

This is a brilliantly conceived album and superbly showcases the musical inspirations behind a very influential musical duo. The mix has all the right ingredients for a chill out album from the beautiful intro courtesy of DJ Cam right through to the end of the CD with Someday We'll All Be Free from Donny Hathaway. In between we have great tracks from Carl Craig, Model 500, The Roots and Dubtribe Sound System. The stand out track for me however is the haunting vocals provided by Beth Orton laid ontop of an EBTG inspired beat - brilliant!!!

As I've said this is one of the best in the Back to Mine series, a pure classic of album which will never date or be out of your CD player - I promise.

quite stunning 25 July 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I was absolutely blown away by this album. It is a truly remarkable album which blends seamlessly hip-hop, funk and a bit of everything in between. Definite stand-outs (which is hard on an album filled from start to finish with brilliant tunes) are Slick Rick with his beautiful mix of hip-hop and storytelling, and the wonderul haunting voice of Beth Orton.
Buy this album, it's a great addition to anyone's collection. Truly outstanding

Best Back to Mine yet
Having all of them, I can honestly say that this is the best one yet. It's got hip hop, house, more hip hop, funk, and dreamy electronic ambient that make this album amazing. Read more

This is another mind-blowingly relaxed and chilled out easy listening album. The track listing is well thought out and rivals the Faithless or Tenaglia albums. Read more
