The quirky residents of Madrigal Close are back as Anna and Cass prepare to celebrate baby Florrie?s christening. Andy, Florrie?s gay father, is dating his old flame Tony, but Tony contrives to split up the family whilst Ida, the next-door neighbour from hell, also sticks her nose in. Meanwhile Greg, who lives across the road, is bringing up his daughter alone and dating Shirley. But when his ex, Acorn, the now famous eco-poet, walks back into their lives everything is turned upside down. Anna?s wanton friend Ruby has to decide whether to settle down with her young lover Johnnie, whilst Shirley?s relationship and family falls apart when her mother moves into the flat above the Cosmic Cafe after discovering her husband?s affair. Each of the residents? lives converge at the Cosmic Cafe as they struggle to make decisions that could alter all of their lives forever.

This is as good as the original Around the Houses but more acidic and careworn. The ideal couple Cass and Anna with their new baby are under stress as father Andy is pulled away from them by jealous lover Tony. At points, all characters are pushed so far that we cannot like them any more. But after the underside of our rainbow society has been shown to be crawling with worms, our dear novelist sets about putting things right, but somehow still awry.
Hope is fighting it out with disillusionment. And at the end everyone gets together at the cafe Christmas party and dances the Hokey Cokey. The effect is a bit Dance to the Music of Time gone seriously downmarket and a bit out of tune. No wonder Amanda Boulter moved to Dorset.

I was worried buying the second book, as didnt what to be disappointed. I havent Been.You dont even need to of read the first book to fully enjoy this book. Its a book that makes you laugh,shocks you and makes you love the characters. This is a must read for anyone. If your looking for a summer read, i strongly reccommend this book.
