France released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Mono ), French ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Black & White, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Ginger Rogers slipped off her dancing shoes to play one of her best comic roles as Polly Parish, a salesgirl at a large department store. Single and with no steady beau, Polly leads a quiet life until she discovers a baby left at her doorstep. While puzzled by this development, Polly feels for the child and decides to adopt the baby. However, most of her co-workers raise their eyebrows at Polly's new status as a single mother, believing that she's actually the mother. The owner of the store where Polly works, J.B. Merlin (Charles Coburn), is taken aback, and his son David (David Niven), who has a reputation as a ladies' man, is dispatched to lead Polly back to the straight-and-narrow. Bachelor Mother was remade in 1956 as Bundle of Joy, a vehicle for then-married Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher. SCREENED/AWARDED AT: Oscar Academy Awards, ...Bachelor Mother

5.0 out of 5 stars The Magic of Ginger 2 Mar 2003
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Garson Kanin directed this Norman Krasna screenplay and if you ever doubt the magic of Ginger Rogers you have only to watch this film for absolute proof. The always loveable Charles Coburn and a young, dashing, and very funny David Niven help this become a true classic. Ginger gives a sweet and comical performance that is a reminder of just how great she was.

Ginger plays Polly Parrish, temporary Christmas help at Merlin & Son's department store. Charles Coburn is J. B. Merlin and David Niven is his footloose son David. Ginger is given her pink slip along with the other Christmas help and upon leaving the store comes across an old woman leaving a small baby on the steps of an orphanage. Ginger of course picks the baby up as the door opens and from here on in everyone assumes it's hers!

When she leaves the baby there it is traced back to her former employer and Niven agrees to keep her on so she can keep her baby! Ginger gets tired of explaining how it's not her baby and since she is slowly but surely becoming the baby's mother anyway she gives in. A very funny Niven keeps stopping buy to "help" and he and Ginger have some truly nice moments together. One particular scene after an hilarious date with Niven, as Ginger talks to her baby about it, will make you fall in love with her.

Ginger Rogers was a wonderful light comedic actress and along with "Lucky Partners" with Ronald Coleman, "Fifth Avenue Girl," and her Oscar winning "Kitty Foyle," this is one of her finest films. Ginger Rogers was the sweet American girl next door. She was never prettier than in this film and simply exudes a luminous charm in every scene. This might just be her finest performance.

This is a movie that will have you laughing or smiling all the way through. Anyone who ever questions the importance of Ginger Rogers in American cinema need only be reminded of this; in the tiny annex where Anne Frank spent so much time, where every inch of space was precious and guarded, was a torn out picture from a movie magazine, of Ginger Rogers...........

5.0 out of 5 stars "Keep those ducks in motion!" 13 Mar 2009
By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Bachelor Mother is an almost perfect romantic comedy from 1939 that's ideal for the Christmas holiday season. Ginger Rogers is the shopgirl who loses her job on Christmas Eve and who makes the mistake of holding an abandoned baby outside a foundlings home: from that point on, everyone thinks it's hers, and when boss's son David Niven gets her her job back and gives her a raise to look after the baby, they assume he's the father. Norman Krasna's then-risque script (although remade in 1952 as Bundle of Joy, it's film that wouldn't be easy to remake with today's very different social mores) is sharp, Garson Kanin's direction pitch-perfect and the film full of memorable moments, from David Niven's scornful impersonation of Ginger Rogers' jitterbugging or his attempt to return a faulty Donald Duck toy - Donald Duck plays a large part in the proceedings - at his own store to Rogers pretending to be Svedish at a New Year's Eve party. There's a good supporting cast too, not least Charles Coburn as the determined family patriarch who isn't going to let facts get in the way - "I don't care who the father is, I'm the grandfather!" Great fun, it's perfect for Christmas and the New Year. And remember - "Keep those ducks in motion!"

The French DVD - released as Mademoiselle et son Bébé - offers an acceptable but not outstanding transfer of the original black and white version with English soundtrack and removeable French subtitles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dvd quality fine 18 Jan 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Was a bit concerned when I read the other reviews what dvd quality would be like but have wanted this film on dvd for so long and was one of last for me to replace from my taped-off-tv video collection. Have never managed to see it on tv since so went for it and quality is fine to me. Forgotten how great it is. Great plot, great humour, perfect actors for each part, (Is it me or does Jennifer Anniston sometimes pull Ginger's great expressions?)and just right length.
