I'm beginning to think a Bach cantata has its merits as a hangover cure, even if it doesn't clear one's eyesight immediately (MY HEART, not my liver). Lately there's been some concern in the media over food wastage, including those salad bags you buy, eat about 10% and then bin after a few days. So it's good to see label "outhere" doing their bit to raise awareness. The sleeve photo of maestro Herreweghe even appears to show him describing the ideal girth for cucumber slices. :)

As the other contributor said, this is a handsome collection with superb sound, but this is Bach in pensive, heavy-hearted mode, not trumpeting with glory. The many solo contributions resound in an atmosphere of loneliness among equals, awaiting some sign to strengthen their resolve in the face of adversity. Such voices are purged of operatic glamour but the spiritual fires are purified. I've always felt the period instrument stylee works best with poems of isolation or loss, the cantatas of celebration or communal joy needing a bigger sound. Herreweghe's team sound ideal here.

Since no conductor has the flexibility to alter their style according to the needs of each cantata, modern instruments and a big choir one day, small period band and a vocal quartet next, the person to do it is you, dear listener, building your collection. Don't feel duty bound to remain in the care of a JEG when a Richter or a Munchinger work better, or vice versa.

The transparency and the balance in the sound, in my opinion it's perfect.
Here Bach is only JOY!

Everyone who loves and don't love Bach music should at least listen once to this production!
