This music was at least 200 years ahead of its time and I love it so much that I have no less than 10 versions including Ma, Casals, Fournier.
This one has the richest tones, a beautiful phrasing, a gorgeous tendency to linger occasionally and a real heart to it.
Desert island disk material but you need a good stereo because the sound is extremely rich and resonant on a period cello. Tempo is generally slower and more relaxing than but he does pick up the speed where necessary.
You gotta have it, honestly, and the people in the USA have it really cheap.

Format: Audio CD
Although I'm not particulary fond of Casal's idiosyncratic recordings of these addictive cello music, I completely agree with him saying that 'Bach cannot write a note, as insignificant it may seem, without this note being transcendental'.
And here by the hands of Sergi Istomin, he polishes this diamond from a unique perspective. His tempi are somewhat slower than those of his collegues. For example, his cello sings for 4 minutes and 20 seconds in No.2 Prelude; conversely Grendon(1964) 3:33; Kirshbaum(1993) 3:39; Fournier(1961) 3:26; Schiff(1984) just 3 minutes; and Bylsma(1979) 3:08.
But you'll be surprised at his interesting phrasing here and there, which are again convincing. This is a must for those who are keen on period-instrument music.

A fitting memorial for a great artist 8 April 2005
By Arthur R. Krieck - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
These recordings offer a kind of music-making seldom heard today, committed, intense and vivid. There are no gaps of concentration here: every note is played with such passionate attention that the music seems to live on its own, beyond the instrument. After decades of exposure to "period" performance practice one might raise one's eyebrows at some of Miss Fuchs' choices of tempo and articulation, but the playing is so gorgeously musical that these questions are irrelevant.

The remastering is quite well done, using good but aged (monophonic) vinyl copies of these early 1950s recordings as sources, rather than the original master tapes. As a result there is some LP surface noise and a bit of turntable rumble, and the music which was at the end of an LP side is more constricted in sound and frequency range, and somewhat more distorted, than that at the outer edge, a common flaw of the LP medium. But the sound overall is quite lstenable and Miss Fuchs' unique, rich tone, faultless intonation and extraordinary facility on her huge Gaspar da Salo viola are well-reproduced.

profound in every sense 2 Mar. 2004
By SH_ - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is the CD you need to test your new hi fi. The sound of the period cello literally shakes the earth and his phrasing is so original it goes right through you. Generally slow in tempo, this is like the Johnny Cash of Bach Cello Suites, no 2 only to the more sophisticated Fournier, similar in mood to the great Casals but more affecting somehow - amazing.

Lillian Fuchs at the top of her game 11 May 2010
By Steve Missal - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
If you are unfamiliar with Lillian Fuchs, the great violist, then break that anonymity barrier with this selection of 6 Bach Suites, transcribed for Viola. Fuchs, whose brother was the well-known violinist Joseph Fuchs, plays with passion and a deep insight into these works, and her gorgeous sound is reason alone to listen. I am hoping some day that the recording of the Martinu Madrigals and the Mozart Duet, featuring this sister/brother Fuchs team, will be released on CD. It is also a gem.

Stunning! 16 Dec. 2008
By V. Ferri - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Very beautiful and honest recording.
read the Gramophone (UK) review by L. Kemp, 1/2005: ... Phrases are often marked out with a generously free rubato which, while it can endanger forward momentum, also gives the music a refreshingly improvisatory feel..but this is Bach playing of elegance and delicacy - I love the way his double-stops can be like wispy brush- strokes. In fact, by the time I reached the end of it, I realised that this unassuming release (recorded as far back as 1997) offers one of the most attractive and satisfying `Baroque' recordings of these pieces yet made.

A must-have recording of the Cello Suites 6 Jun. 2013
By Hans U. Widmaier - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
To my great surprise, I found that this ranks among the greatest recordings of the cello suites. I knew nothing about Lillian Fuchs before I accidentally stumbled across this CD. Her technique is stellar, she's supremely intelligent and unsentimental, and her interpretation of the suites is monumental - on the same scale as Casals, or Milstein's recording of the violin sonatas and partitas. Do yourself a huge favor and buy this recording. It's an absolute treasure.
