Remarkable value box set of greatest Bach sacred cantatas. Recordings all ex-East German analogue but good quality recordings. In the main quite traditional in performance but with many famous/superb soloists and nice alert singing and playing from choirs and orchestras. Some favourite cantatas missing and duplication almost unavoidable but absurd value. Don't hesitate

Eleven CDs for a grand total of £8.26 - that includes p&p and VAT. Amazing price. John Elliot Gardner is my favourite interpreter of Bach, his Actus Tragicus, particularly the last joyful, singing, dancing Chorus in praise of death leaves the Hans-Joachim version standing. However, we are talking about the choir of the Thomas Kirche here, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and Rotzsch, who is in a line of Thomas Kirche' Cantors following Bach, himself. These Cantatas have a beauty and truth of their own, I have not had time to play all 11 discs yet, but my next Christmas will begin with CD 2, Wie Schone Leuchtet Der Morgenstern, a cantata for the annunciation, but one inseparable in my mind from the joy and beauty of Christmas morning.
