I love this CD. The playing exhibits all that is wonderful about the Dutch early music school in that the interpretations are intelligent, vigorous and intensely musical. This most cerebral of music comes alive. It lifts my heart and satisfies my mind.

How could anyone not enjoy Bach's Musical Offering? The music is wonderful and it is interesting to note its influence on Gubaidulina's Offertorum.

Some of Bach Best Played Beautifully 11 Oct 2013

I like Bach. This music wonderfully displays Bach's ability for invention. Tom Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra do a masterful job. I consider them one of the best period instrument ensembles. (Should you prefer modern instrumentation, consider Marriner & ASMF's).
The composition is based on a single musical theme given to Bach by Frederick the Great. The two met late in Bach's career. Frederick considered "the old Bach" old-fashioned and overly ornate. He challenged Bach to produce a six-voice fugue on the theme, a challenge Frederick likely thought impossible. Little was expected; much was received.
Bach's Musical Offering is a delightful example of the inventiveness of a great master.
