I have 15 versions of the cello suites which I rotate every evening and this is straight in with Rostropovitch in the top group: Wonderful, moody, slow, modern, soulful, Russian - without gimmicks and absolutely worth a listen

Beautifully recorded, and Kniazev produces a handsome sound. I don't think that anyone will be disappointed in this set.

But the discography of the Bach cello suites is very, very crowded with superb performances. This one, I'm afraid, is for the man (or woman) who already has 10 or a dozen recordings and is looking for something different. And different Kniazev's recording certainly is. While the quicker movements are taken at a sensible pace, slower movements are taken so slowly that they nearly come to a standstill. Just to give you an idea, here's an example - the Allemande of Suite #6. Casals takes it in 7:35, Wispelwey II in 8:18, Schiff in 5:43(!). Kniazev comes in at 15:49. Tempi don't mean everything, but at 15 minutes, it's impossible even for someone as talented as Kniazev to maintain momentum.
