This is a re-recording of one of the liveliest versions of the Brandenburgs. It is the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, with Ton Koopman at the helm. The recordings date back to 1984, whejn they were issued on Erato, and they have been out of the catalogue for ages. Along with the companion disc on Apex, they must be the best value period-instrument version available. This exciting dance music would be an ideal introduction to "classical music" for anyone, from a small child to a teenager to a fifty-year old who thinks it's time to start listening to the classics.
This disc also includes a gorgeous concerto for flute, while the companion has Orchestral Suite no. 2.
An absolute corker of a record! Buy several copies!

....and I don't mean this isn't the real thing, most certainly it is.
I must have auditioned just about every version of the Brandenburgs recorded in the past 50 years. In that vast catalogue many are so-so and some are quite tasty, but Amsterdam Baroque's only recording on CD (released as either 1-6 or 1-3 and 4-6) I cherish above all. The playing, aided by first class sound engineering, offers a blend of precision, lyricism and emotional content that very few ensembles manage to bring to these - let's face it - done-to-death pieces. Tempi seem relaxed even in the faster movements, suggesting a measured commitment to the music rather than a rush to get to the end of the piece (cf AAM/ Hogwood).
The ebb and flow of #3 and the controlled build in energy towards the end is a golden moment in an all-round fine performance.

Brandenburg concertos 21 Sep 2011

It is a good recording from a good performers. Not sure if like concertos itself. It is a third and likely last attempt to understand why these concertos are so highly valued by the other people. There are some really good pieces of music, but not as good as let's say similar Orchestral Suites by the same ABO and Koopman.
