I should make clear at the outset that I don't own this CD. However, the Suites originally appeared on two LPs comprising Bach's complete lute works, subsequently rereleased as two CDs, which I do own. These now appear to be unavailable.
By omitting three peripheral pieces, DG have managed to squeeze the four Lute Suites on to a single CD, which by my computation makes a touch over 80 minutes of music.
Göran Söllscher, although not exactly a household word outside Sweden, is certainly one of the world's best guitarists; and this is particularly evident in his interpretations of Bach.
There are several excellent recordings of the Suites, both on the guitar and on the original instrument. But what distinguishes Söllscher's is that they are performed on a superb 11-string Bolin guitar, which offers the range of the Baroque lute while retaining the guitar's clarity. Söllscher is thus one of the few guitarists who can retain the original bass lines.
The recording quality is excellent. The playing, warm and characterful without being romanticised, is wonderful.
I have many recordings of the Lute Suites, but these are the ones I always come back to.

Söllscher gives a superb reading of these suites. The instrument is not the "right", the interpretation is not "original". But it captures this music in an excellent way. The technical level is absolutely first class!

Best Bach Lute Suites

Goran Sollscher is a grrreat classical guitarist !!! this CD of Sollscher's Bolin 11 string guitar arrangements of Bach's Lute Suites is one of my favorite recordings of Bach's music... Sollscher has always been a fine accompanist of violin but this CD really captures his talents as a solo artist... if you love great solo classical guitar, this CD should be in your collection- well played, well recorded & divinely inspired !!!
