This is a wonderful CD. Ten of the tracks are from the Bach Cantata Pilgrimage with the expected excellent singing of the Monteverdi Choir conducted by John Eliot Gardiner. The main attraction for me, however, is the title track - Alles mit Gott. This newly discovered piece (2005) is the Birthday Ode for Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar, which had lain undiscovered since 1713. Three of the 12 stanzas are sung beautifully by the young Welsh soprano Elin Manahan Thomas, whose lovely voice is ideally suited to the requirements of the piece. It is no wonder that, despite all the talent in the Monteverdi Choir, Gardiner asked Elin Manahan Thomas to sing the first performance and then presented her with a facimile copy of the first edition - this was shown on a recent S4C programme. The CD notes by Michael Maul about the discovery of the piece also add to the enjoyment. Listen and enjoy some wonderful Bach and you will be humming the tune of Alles mit Gott for days!
