4.0 out of 5 stars High standards don't always work 1 Jun 2011
By Flos
Format:Audio CD
Four brilliant soloists in a one-voice-per-part performance. The standard of playing and singing is perfect throughout. However, I have one big reservation. Emma Kirkby is a wonderful soloist at any time. Unfortunately it is her capacity as a soloist which mars this performance. Her highly distinctive voice can be heard above and beyond the other singers in the choruses. I would have preferred a different soprano here, one whose voice would have blended better with the others. For technical excellence, yes, this a lovely disc, but for depth and emotion I would pick another.

5.0 out of 5 stars a voice teacher early music fan 21 Dec 2005

BACH'S CHARISMATIC COUNTERPOINT

Soloists and chorus are one and the same which makes for vocal expertise throughout all four cantatas.

The 4 cantatas performed on this disc were all composed in 1707-08,when Bach was in the first flush of youth, in his early 20's. He was writing cantatas for every Sunday service and at the same time was organist and choirmaster at a church in Muhlhausen.

The cantata 'Christ lag in Todes Banden' (Christ lay in death's strong bonds) confronts death in youthful-eyed and -eared calm, although its basic key in E minor, for Bach,a penitential key and, indeed, his key of Crucifixion in the B minor mass.

The cantata 'Aus der Tiefen rufe ich Herr zu dir' (Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord) seems to have been commisioned to commemorate a savage municipal fire that had ravaged the town of Mihlhausen in the previous year. The words, mostly from Psalm 130, speak 'de profundis', inspiring Bach to an appropriate grandeur and monumentality, though the work is scored modestly for strings with solo oboe and bassoon and organ continuo.

The cantata 'Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit' (God's time is the very best time) was christened 'Actus tragicus' because, although Bach is said to have been scarcely more than 20 years old as the time of its writing, it embraces the essential tragic experience with the utmost profundity.

The cantata 'Der Herr denket an uns' (The Lord is mindful of us) is a longer and grander act of praise, not in tragic G minor but in 'white' C major, emblematic of light.

In Bach's day the 4 soloists would have been members of the small chorus; in this recorded performance the soloists serve, together, as the chorus. In the end, we have to say that Bach wrote his most sublime music for the church; but most important, his writings have a spiritual power, a solid strength and sincerity that cannot be traced to technique, but to the inspiration of pure genius. And the 4 soloists on this disc bring out very clearly his greatness! There are quartets, duets, trios and solos all accompanied expertly by the Purcell Quartet. In addition we have recorders, oboe and bassoon to add to the overall instrumental "color".

I must make a point in saying that this recording is performed by the early music A Team: Emma Kirkby (soprano), Michael Chance (counter-tenor), Charles Daniels (tenor) and Peter Harvey (bass). All are tried and true performers with outstanding individual voices and mega experience in the early music and Baroque genres. Moreover, the Purcell Quartet, outstanding in their own right, fit very well with the voices.

Two of the many high points for me: "In deine Hande.." Michael Chance (countertenor solo);"Den Tod neimand zwingen kunnt" Emma Kirkby & Chance duet. It's all great music and a must if you are an Early Music fan!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Way of All Flesh 26 April 2009

I didn't find this nearly as enjoyable as the reviewer above. I have always loved Emma Kirkby, and lately, I have been listening/watching a DVD of the St Matthew Passion that features Emma and Michael Chance, who sings beautifully on that DVD. And I am one who prefers the "one voice per part" performances of these pieces to those with choirs. Here, however, is not a good argument for it.

BAD NEWS: Back in 1982 or thereabouts, when I was but a wee lad, I first heard Emma Kirkby sing Bach's cantata number 51 "Jauchzet Gott in allen landen" with John Eliot Gardiner on a CD that also featured Bach's Magnificat. I was smitten. I wanted to marry her just so I could hear her practice. Twenty-seven years later, Ms. Kirkby's "instrument" seems to have become a little long in the tooth. Same thing for Michael Chance. I thought both sounded tight and dry.

I especially disagree with the above reviewer's praise of Chance's reading of "In deine haende" from the Actus Tragicus. I thought the vocal wobble in Chance's rendering approached the alarming. Not as bad as Drew Minter on the ABS recording of that piece, but clearly pushing the envelope of the slightly hysterical - in other words, nearly, but not quite, out of control. Chance never actually does lose control, but even though he generally hits the right notes, the quality of the falsetto has become a bit too false, and the threat of wobbling off the planet seemed ever present.

GOOD NEWS: The players are wonderful, the musical direction is spot on, and Charles Daniels and Peter Harvey (tenor and bass, respectively) are very pleasant to listen to. I give it three stars because of those three plusses.

So this was not the revelation I had hoped for, but you could do worse. I certainly wouldn't recommend it for people who don't intend to get another performance. Daniel Taylor's Theater of Ancient Music's recordings are better. Rifkin's are best. But Rifkin is sadly not available for download, so you have to buy the CD.

If you like choirs with your cantatas, using period style instruments and performance practice, I recommend those of the Bach Collegium Japan, under Maasaki Suzuki - who are presently projected to record the complete cantata canon. Also, many of the Herreweghe's and Ton Koopman's recordings are quite good.

Bottom line: unless you want it for comparison, you really don't need this one.
