For a long time I have been looking for a decent recording of JS Bach's sensational Kantate No21.."Ich hatte viel bekummernis",composed in 1714 in Weirmar by JS Bach at the age of 29.There are many recordings of this Kantate, but to me they all sound a bit too rushed and not as moving as the seminal 1970 version recorded in Bohemia with Helmut Rilling conducting;(in my view the definitive version).Nevertheless it is one of the most accessible of JS Bach's works, an incredibly delicate, intricate ,beautiful and complex piece of music, with its baroque touches, Italian flourishes and profound radiant spirituality. The tonal interplay between the diverse instruments is utter perfection, listening to the devastatingly graceful dialogue between the Soul (Soprano)and Christ (Basso)one cannot help but be moved, as the temptations of the Flesh and worldly pleasures remains at odds with the demands of leading a virtuous Life, what is a man/woman to do to redeem his/her Soul? trust in Christ i guess ; only JS Bach's genius could impart Choral music with such honesty and pathos; I would recommend this recording to any person curious about Classical Music and Baroque Music in particular; technology can allow anyone to listen and sample the aural treasures reserved to King, Queens and the "Academie".Don't dither buy it, its truly sublime.
