I first came across the name of Ekaterina Dershavina in my old copy of "Penguin Guide to CDs and DVDs" issued five or six years ago. Her recording of the work was one of the top recommendations, together with those by some well-known pianists and harpsichordists.

This Russian pianist is unknown to the international concert circuit. After winning a piano competition in Germany in the early 1990s, she has been focusing on teaching at The Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow. (This is the school where Egveny Kissin studied.)

When I finally bought her CD recently, I was bowled over by her clean articulation, lack of mannerisms and overall beauty of her interpretation. Her performance is fresh. Every phrase is moulded most beautifully and tempi are well judged. Unlike some musicians who have a personalized style of their own in order to make a point, her style is "objective".

This is a rather intimate performance as if the work is played in a private home rather than at a concert hall. Isn't it how it should be performed if the legend - though generally discredited - about the commissioning of the work is to be believed? I now consider the recording as my most favourite version.

In summary, this CD is well worth acquiring - at any price. The digital recording is truthful. The current, low price may make people think it's of low artistic quality. Don't be misled by it!

Top Notch 30 Nov. 2010
By Noam Eitan - Published on Amazon.com
I got this about 3 years ago and my first impressions were: what a discovery! I couldn't believe my ears! Fabulous, nuanced, graceful, varied dynamics, surprising balance of left vs. right hand in several variations, gentle, elegant phrasing, no show-off etc., etc. and Arte Nova's sound is impeccable - no artificial reverb, no knob-twiddling idiots "improving" the sound. I waited 3 years before I posted this to see if my first "wow" reaction would hold - it does. If you google her name you'll see she is very highly regarded by the few who heard her. I have since learned from a Russian friend that she now concentrates on teaching. Very highly recommended!

Goes to the head of the line. 2 Mar. 2011

My favorite piano recordings of the Goldberg Variations include Schepkin, Constantine Lipschitz, the live performance of Nikolayeva (sic) on BBC, Andre Tchaikovsky and, naturally both Glenn Gould studio performances. Each has something special and original to offer. But the rendition by Ekatarina Dershavina may eclipse them all. Spirit, rhythm, touch, interiority, a magnificent technique, blessed with a great instrument for Bach and excellent sound engineering. Don't be fooled by the stock cover, (Sony/BMG couldn't do a little better with the artwork?) this is a top of the line production and this is a very special lady. I'm ordering her Medtner recording, but for god's sake, why is she not famous? Someone must record her in core repertoire. - Geoffrey Dorfman

Ekaterina Dershavina's Goldberg Variations: wonderful! 19 Nov. 2012
By Kenneth Bergman - Published on Amazon.com
Bach composed the Goldberg Variations in 1741, supposedly for the Russian envoy at the Dresden court, Count Keyserlingk. The Count had in his employ a former Bach student, Johann Gottlieb Theophilus Goldberg, who at 14 possessed a remarkable keyboard ability and supposedly played the variations on nights when the Count had difficulty sleeping. At least that's the story that Johann Niklaus Forkel, Bach's first biographer wrote down 60 years later, but its truth has been questioned. Bach simply called his composition "Aria with different variations for harpsichord with two manuals." The aria was taken from the Klavierbuchlein for Anna Magdalena, Bach's second wife, written in 1725.

Whatever their true history, the Variations are among the finest that have ever been composed. They cover a wide range of keyboard styles and emotional moods, and every third one is written in canon. One of the variations is written as a fugue, and another at the halfway point is a miniature overture with fugal ending. Three of the variations are in the minor key; the adagio of the 25th variation is especially lovely and heartfelt, it also contains chromatic harmonies that border on atonality. The final variation, the "quodlibet," makes use of two folk songs well know in Bach's day. After that, the aria is repeated to close the work.

There are many recordings of this well know composition, both for harpsichord (as intended by Bach) and for piano. These variations, difficult enough on a two-manual harpsichord, are even more of a challenge on a piano because of the hand-crossing that is frequently needed. The best know piano versions are those by Glenn Gould, recorded in 1955 and 1981. I have the 1981 version but find it eccentric --- as only Gould could be --- and not enhanced by his occasional humming along with the music. I had never heard of the Russian pianist Ekaterina Dershavina before getting this CD, but I was blown away by her absolutely gorgeous playing of the variations. She takes all the difficulties in stride and makes it sound easy, and she has a light piano touch that resembles harpsichord playing. On the other hand, she makes use of the piano's ability to vary volume level from one variation to another to suit the mood of the music. The DDD sound quality is excellent. All in all, a wonderful recording!

Wow 2 May 2010

Perfect and perfectly musical throughout. Every note is positioned with thought and sensitivity and intelligence. The piano sounds clear without ever sounding harsh. Because there are no eccentricities, some may think it lacks character, but I think that makes it refreshing and wonderful and admirable in every way. This recording is a gem.

allured 27 Jan. 2010

This is an extraordinarily fresh rendering of the well-known Goldbergs, ever so spritely and spirited. She surely holds her own with Gould and Schiff, and is more fun to listen to. Saucy and perky, and amazingly adept.
