Like all the other Eliot Gardiner Bach recordings I have heard, this one hits the nail absolutely on the head. The playing is always precise and clearly articulated, while the tempi are, to me, perfectly judged, never allowing the more solemn pieces to slip into sentimentality. The forces that are used are not so large as to muddy any of the individual parts, but can still convey the power of the music where appropriate. The recording is beautifully balanced, allowing all the lines to be heard clearly. Perhaps the best compliment I can pay this recording is to say that it allows the listener to appreciate 100% of the music, with no detail being lost in performance or recording. I have bought a number of the Eliot Gardiner recordings from their 2000 Bach Pilgrimage Tour - every one without exception has been wonderful.

A cd of funeral music may appear at first sight not particularly uplifting, but Gardner's bright, incisive interpretation of these exquisitely bitter-sweet cantatas is rivetting from start to finish. And with soloists the calibre of Michael Chance, Nancy Argenta and Anthony Rolfe-Johnson, the result is electrifying. A precision of tone and clarity of articulation is essential in Bach, and in this respect both the choir and soloists excel. The final motet is a richly underscored triumphant end to a cd of fine Bach interpretation.

Gentle music for one of the most serious and moving ceremonies anyone can have,or attend.
This is JSBach at his magnificent best.
I obtained this for "Actus Tragicus":and I'm so glad that I did so. Although that work is fairly short,in comparison to a lot of Bach's music;it contains what must be some of his most heart-rending music. We learn from the notes that Bach had quite a difficult life:hardly a year of his married life passed without the death of children:and also his beloved wife.
Then,of course there were other deaths for him to experience. Possibly "Actus", was for one of his close family.
A moving, yet beautiful experience. I hope YOU will enjoy this as much as I have.

A voice teacher and early music fan 11 Feb. 2006
By George Peabody - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
QUOTE FROM JOHN ELIOT GARDINER:'I BELIEVE THAT THE CHURCH CANTATAS ARE THE VERY HEART OF BACH'S MUSIC.'

Illness and death constantly disrupted the security of Bach's childhood and adulthood. We do not know when or for whom the "Actus tragicus"BWV 106 was written. Bach was in the habit of using compositional devices to illustrate theological points. In the central movement of BWV106 the earnest plea "Ja komm, Herr Jesu!" (Come, Lord Jesus!") is repeated more than 15 times, and the music demonstrates that the plea is not in vain.

A spiritual longing for eternity with Christ emanates from the text and the music of the motet :'O Jesu Christ, mein's Lebens Licht' BWV118/231(O Jesus Christ, light of my life). The motet was first given in 1736 at a Leipzig memorial service; we don't know for whom. Gardiner guides his chorus through the nine movement long motet with gentle confidence. His knowing control of the pace sustains both the long lines(reminiscent of the opening chorus to St. Matthew Passion)and the harmonic tension. This is truly a heart-rendingly beautiful motet.

Bach wrote the text and music of a mourning ode,"Lass,Furstin, lass noch einen Strahl"BWV198 for Christiane Eberhardine, Electress of Saxony. It is an indication of the timeless quality of Bach's music that today these 3 works can inspire and comfort people of every creed and nation.

John Eliot Gardiner has again produced a truly wondrous recording of Bach's music with his excellent Monteverdi Choir and a fabulous group of soloists:Nancy Argento (soprano)-Michael Chance (countertenor)-Anthony Rolfe Johnson (tenor) and Stephen Varcoe (bass). My favorite Aria: "In Deine Hande befehl ich meinen Geist" (Into Thy Hands I Commend My Spirit) sung magnificently by Chance.

Just an aside and for your information:re-releases and remasterings are commonplace in the recording industry, so don't be 'bent out of shape'if you get caught buying something that you already own. Just do a bit of research on the internet and you will find out easily if it is a remastering etc. OR frequently the issuing date is a clue and often the information given about the recording whereever you buy it will state that it is a remastering or re-release. I'm somewhat annoyed that the overall rating of this particular disc was brought down by reviewers who are NOT judging the music, but their situation. Please don't be one of those who do so. THIS IS A TRULY MARVELOUS AND MOVING RECORDING OF BACH'S BEAUTIFUL MUSIC.

Yes it is a re-release, but still great 29 May 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Yes, this is a re-release of Archiv 429782, but Archiv 429782 is out-of-print, and never got that one. If you have 429782 in your collection, keep it because it will be a collector's item.
In October and November, they will be re-releasing the other two Archiv discs
463587 will be a re-issue of BWV 140 and 147.
463588 will be a re-issue of BWV 36, 61, and 62.
All of the other recordings to come will have been recorded in 1999 and 2000!
Don't miss out on getting this one as an updated version, because the singing is beautiful.

Glad for second chance 30 Oct. 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Yes this is a rerelease (which is not difficult to discern) but I, for one, was happy for an opportunity to restock my shelf. Having given several copies of the older Archiv recording to fellow Bach-lovers, I no longer had one of my own, despite counting it among one of my all-time favorite cantata recordings. In the meantime, the Joshua Rifkin recording of 106 for L'Oiseau-Lyre may have slightly edged out Gardiner's performance for top honors. However, Gardiner's offering of these two funeral cantatas along with the lovely motet (BWV 118b) is every bit as good as remembered, and highly recommended.

Bach Cantata 18 Dec. 2012

This CD was really good, but the tempo was pretty fast, faster than we sang it, and therefore not as helpful as might have otherwise been.
