This CD provides an engaging selection of Bach flute sonatas. The unaccompanied Partita in a minor - Bach's only solo flute work - is a particular joy. The Courante is most impressive with virtuosic passage work and phrasing that leaves the listener breathless! In the Sarabande, Ashley Solomon sustains the poise of the dance and exploits the colourful tones of the baroque flute to its full potential. The playing is always expressive without ever being self-indulgent. The other numbers on this CD employ Terence Charlston on the harpsicord in varying roles: as an equal partner to Solomon's flute in the b minor sonata, and as an accompanist in the e minor, C major and E major sontas. Whatever his role, Charlston compliments Solomon's musical vision, matching phrase for phrase and trill for trill. I loved this recording, and can now appreciate Bach as he would have heard his own compositions - authentic instruments, pitch and ornamentation. However, this interpretation is never bogged down by the academic approach that can be so off-putting in some early music performances. We are told this is Volume 1. What further pleasures will Volume 2 hold for us?

Memorable playing!17 May 2002

To play like this is what it means to be a true musician, in my view. There is technical brilliance throughout, but spontaneity remains; Bach's music is beautiful, as always, and the result is a recording which is very much alive. I have never heard better harpsichord playing, and Solomon is solid on the flute, as well. This is a great CD, one of my favorites!
