5.0 out of 5 stars Barking Mad Bargain 9 May 2007
This neatly presented 155 CD box set includes the entire lifetime works of the great JS Bach. This is an incredible achievement which should be appreciated by everyone, and especially by the Bach admirer who (like me) has spent considerable time searching for some of the composer's lesser known works.

Far too much material to review in depth, suffice to say that there is no problem with the recordings or the performers of these works and there should be absolutely no hesitation in buying this bargain.

To briefly describe the set, it consists of six sections:

1. Orchestral works and chamber music.

2. Keyboard works - played on harpsichord, as they would have been composed for this instrument throughout most of Bach's lifetime - the piano only becoming popular during the latter part of his life.

3. & 4. Cantatas 1 and 2 - specially performed and recorded for this set by the Holland Boys Choir. As such they are a nicely uniform interpretation of Bach's immense output of cantatas.

5. Vocal works - by various performers.

6. Organ works - all played by Hans Fagius so, like the cantatas, offer a consistent interpretation.

Included also is a PC format CD with almost 500 pages of information on Bach's life, biographies of the performers/orchestras/conductors, comments on each CD, libretti (words) to all of the vocal works and cantatas.

Buy this collection before it becomes a discontinued item.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Value 15 May 2007
My first reaction to this collection was rather like Samuel Johnson's to women preachers or dogs walking on their hind legs - amazement that Brilliant could produce it at all for a price which works out at little more than 50p per disc. But it has to be judged on its merits, regardless of price, and these are surprisingly high. Apart from the cantatas, which were all recorded in house, Brilliant also seem to heve recorded the two Passions in Kings College Chapel. Some other choral works, including the Mass in B Minor are performed by Harry Christophers Sixteen,in this case licensed from Coro.

Apart from the organ works, recorded in Sweden, other works are mainly performed by lesser known Dutch and German forces but these are never less than workmanlike and sometimes excellent.

Although a lifelong admirer of Bach, there are many works in this collection that I have encountered for the first time. I've come away with an even greater admiration for his achievements and am grateful to Brilliant for giving me the opportunity to appreciate them at such a ridiculously low cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Performances at a Bargain Price 9 Mar 2007
By Paul D
In a space saving box we have the entire output of one of the most prolific and inventive composers in history. Each of the 155 discs is in its own slipcase detailing tracks and performers. Brilliant have been very clever in licensing performances by some of the world's top performers. In addition, they have recorded all the Cantatas, using a boys' choir, as Bach intended. This speed-recording has resulted in some questionable performances, but the majority of the works are very well played indeed. In general, tempi are on the slow side, but the performers never wallow, and there is depth in the music that is drawn out beautifully. No one keen on discovering this great composer at a premium price will be disappointed in exploring this incredible set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bachtastic! Buy it whilst it's still available! 10 May 2008
If like me, you have a consuming passion for the music of Bach, and you're looking at this webpage, then do not delay in ordering this boxset. I braced myself, clicked a few times, and now here I sit basking in the glory of nearly 7 whole days' worth of Bach (and that's if you sat and listened to it all, with no breaks, day and night!). I have listened to days' worth of music, but still barely broken the back of the collection. There still remains so much to explore of Bach's genius, and time I hear a new piece I am thrilled and astounded afresh. It's very difficult to believe that a lone human being was capable of producing such music!

It's difficult to distill the worth of this collection into so short a review, but put quite simply, the Bach Edition Boxset is a masterpiece, sold for less than a third what I'd expect to pay for it. The publishers at Brilliant Classics really have done the planet a favour. The quality of recording does indeed vary, but is generally superb or good. Whilst personal preference leads me to prefer some other recordings to those in the Boxset, none of the recordings is intolerable; all are charming, useful and form a brilliant point of comparison for those recordings you might prefer in some instances.

Some reviewers have complained at the continuous use of the harpsichord throughout the keyboard works CDs, but I find this touching and authentic; if nothing else, you're less likely to buy harpsichord editions of the CDs in the future, and I consider hearing the music as Bach may have done to be a wonderful thought. The keyboardists recorded on the set are universally renowned, and the different types of harpsichords used for some of the CDs provide a welcome blend.
