Good but not great 22 Feb 2005
Despite its high retail price, this disc offers good value as a 90 minute collection of six of Bach's finest orchestral works, including the two "standard" solo violin concertos and the double concerto. The sound is good too, though a little too well upholstered for my taste. Instrumental separation is not as "flashy" as Tacet sometimes make it, and that's to the good. The sound is certainly streets ahead of the rival Manze SACD in Harmonia Mundi, which is very raw and aggressive.

The Stuttgart players are a modern instrument band and, as with the sound, they sound a little too well mannered and plush for today's tastes, very much a throwback to the 1970's. That's not a major problem, but the lack of characterisation is, - if you want modern instruments, stick to Mutter on HMV.

In sum, very acceptable, but Bach should be inspirational, not just pleasant.
