Brilliant. Absolutely, stunningly, mind-blowingly brilliant. This was the kick-off concert for the Gardiner Bach cantata pilgrimage of 2000, performed in the Herderkirche, Weimar. I have Gardiner's CD of the Weihnachtsoratorium, which I previously regarded as the best version. Not any more. This knocks spots off it. Soloists (vocal and instrumental), the EBS and of course the marvellous Monteverdis are on top form and the whole thing crackles with excitement. Gardiner clearly has a ball; no routine music-making this, this is passionate with a capital P. He also has a feeling for the dance-like rhythms in much of the piece - just listen to the Monteverdis sizzle through the skittering opening chorale of Cantata 5 and see how long you can stop your feet from tapping. I am in danger of wearing all the pits off this. If you love Bach, you MUST have this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - well worth the price 26 Dec 2009

BEWARE! Amazon supplies this DVD in NTSC (i.e. USA) format instead of PAL (i.e. Euro) format. It may not play on older DVD players. If you like Bach's music this is a brilliant DVD and well worth the expense. The singing in German does not detract from the overall experience; highly recommended. The NTSC versus PAL can be a problem if you have an older DVD player. On my older player this DVD only shows in black and white, I have to use a player bought about a year ago to get colour. You may have to adjust both the player and TV to tell them they are dealing with a NTSC disc. Amazon describes this DVD as a PAL disc but what is actually supplied is NTSC.

5.0 out of 5 stars As near to perfection as is possible 10 Jan 2011

This is, quite simply, an unmatched performance of the Christmas Oratorio, from soloists, orchestra to the Monteverdi Choir and the conductor. It is hard to imagine how a performance could be more joyful and exciting as this one. Some might criticise the tempi as being too fast, but for me they all work, and any other prerformance now seems costive in comparison. Special praise for Dietrich Henschel and the superb baroque trumpeter.
