Talk about legendary! Pablo Casals's "discovery" of this music was not only one of the factors that catapulted him to fame as the world's finest cellist, it had a dramatic effect on the rediscovery of Bach as a composer. Until Casals proved otherwise, few believed that these unaccompanied solos could actually be performed as written; many composers and editors tried their hand at adding piano or harpsichord accompaniments, with ludicrous results to modern ears. By proving that Bach meant what he wrote, and by playing the music with such conviction and assurance, Casals really might be said to have ignited the process that led to the "authentic instrument" movement of today, the fundamental principle of which is respect for the composer's original text. Of course, it's another sign of his greatness that these performances have held their own against all-comers since the 1930s. If you like Bach, the cello, or both, you must hear them. --David Hurwitz

5.0 out of 5 stars Casals' Bach 4 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Casals intrerprets Bach with great depth and sensitivity; his seriousness and use of colour suit Bach's writing and sonorities; the unaccompanied cello suites are some of the greatest in the cello repertoire, and this is a great recording of them. Suites no. 1, 2 are very beautiful; 3, 5 complex and exciting; 4, 6 technically demanding and dark.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the classics 19 Sep 2003
By NickG VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This is simply one of the great recordings. If you are at all about this music, you'll be transported. Never mind the limitations of the sound, or the technical imperfections - no-one ever got closer to the truth in this than Casals.
Wonderful!

5.0 out of 5 stars the best version of suites for sollo cello 23 Jan 2013
By lucas
Format:Audio CD
Cello is my favourite instrument and I especially like this wonderful piece by Bach.
I am not an expert or a musician but, after listening to seven or eight different versions of
the "Suites for Solo Cello", I think this one is the best in terms of quality of sound and beauty
of performance. I still need to check a new Pablo Casals cd recently released by ZYX.

Artists such as Torleif Thedeen are genuine artists whose contribution to music is more important
than the contribution of more celebrated cellists who are more in the limelight just because they are media savvy.

1.0 out of 5 stars No lyricism at all 16 May 2001

Format:Audio CD
brilliant technical playing, very aggressive, no soul whatsoever, completely lacks the maturity and delight of the Yo Yo Ma version

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this 30 Aug 2000
A Kid's Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the great recordings of all time, but the sound is so poor... And EMI is to blame. They filtered the original tapes to get rid of the 1930s-noise, and en passant they ruined the cello sound. The same recordings are available on Pearl, unfiltered, and then you can hear from the warmth and wealth of colors in his playing that Casals really was the greatest of cello players.

5.0 out of 5 stars The father of music! 10 May 2002
By Carlos Fuentes y Espinosa - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is the best performance somebody can find. It's played by the greatest musician, mtro. Pau Casals. It is necessary you hear it, then you'll cry because of the excitment. Besides, the sound is quite acceptable, you even hear Casals' voice when he is too excited. These suites were recorded in the 30's, and nobody has improved them. So buy it soon, and have an amazing experience. I finish by saying what the violinist Isaac Stren said once about Casals: "He is the father of all of us".

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding (of course), but sound quality a big minus 22 Feb 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
In the words of Rostropovich himself, Casals is unequalled when it comes to virtuosity. This is felt throughout this recording.
I am still having a hard time with the sound quality of this CD though. Not much to expect from a recording done in 1936-1939 I guess. But it still bugs me when listening, and quite frankly this only makes me prefer other versions.
What I really recommend: get this edition, "the" original one. But also get on EMI Classics Mstislav Rostropovich's version. Rostropovich's play is very close to Casals'; but the 1991 recording will give you outstanding sound quality on top.

5.0 out of 5 stars BBC gives Casals a rave review 6 Sep 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
In a recent survey of recordings of the cello suites for BBC radio 3, the reviewer commented that this was possibly the best recording of ANYTHING made EVER. Not the sort of hyperbole you get normally from the BBC. Personally, I'm not sure I can ignore the poor sound quality, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can not miss it if you are a cello lover. 7 Feb 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
If you are just want to buy some CD for casual listening, or you do care the sound, choose DG's Fournier set (mid-price) or EMI's set. However, Casals' performance is a historical milestone and reflects his serious and in-depth interpretation for Bach's works. For lover of cello or Bach, it is worth keeping.
