Product Description

Product Description

This landmark series is nearly at its end in this antepenultimate recording. The three cantatas on this recording come from the first half of the 1730s and clearly show Bach's affinity for instrumental colour and expressive melodies rich in syncopation and suspensions.

All three works are choral cantatas based on well-known hymns and are therefore more choral in style.

If you don't yet own a single disc from Suzuki's cantata series
(Swedish BIS - thank's Robert!) you have here a good starting point. All these three cantatas are late choral cantatas, 'mature' works for which Bach apparently saved much time and energy. Take for instance cantata 'Ich ruf zu dir...' (BWV 177), it's opening chorus or the following aria 'Ich bitt noch...' and play it to anyone. I bet s/he starts listening to it regardless the situation...There are two discs more in the series: vols 54&55, both almost as superb as this. So, it is the end of the 18 years' project ... or is it? There will surely be many releases from Suzuki and Bach Collegium Japan but what about cantatas? There's been discussion about the re-release of the first 27 cantatas in SACD/box (preliminary backed by Robert von Bahr himself). Let's just hope this will be true already in the near future since to buy volumes individually is not so easily done even in our digital age and there's not any abundance of multichannel recordings of Bach. 'Ich bitt noch mer o Herr Gott'!

As always, Bach Collegium Japan gives you an excellent presentation of Bachs'cantatas. The orchestra and the soloists are magnificent and, of course, the music of Bach is just beautiful!
