2.0 out of 5 stars Bel Canto Bach, 26 April 2009
By
This review is from: Bach - Cantatas Nos 51, 82a and 199 (Audio CD)
It was with interest I noticed that Natalie Dessay had made this recording of Bach cantatas. It is demanding music, which probably does not lie within her normal repertoire. I'm a big fan of Natalie Dessay's, whom I recently saw doing " La Sonnambula" at The Met. That was quite an amazing experience, both her singing and her stage presence. Natalie Dessay sings these difficult Bach arias like her bel canto arias, and this is not necessarily a good way to do it. In my opinion, she lacks the precision and clarity needed, and her pronunciation of the German language leaves much to be desired. I find Emanuelle Haïm's orchestral treatment somewhat dry and lacking in energy, and the sound balance of the recording seems slightly discordant. The overall impression is not convincing, and several times while I was listening I found myself thinking of other things. Natalie Dessay produces a beautiful sound, and on stage she is a compelling artist, but I can not give this recording more than two stars. For the optimal recording of Bach's cantata BWV 51 I recommend Richter's with Edith Mathis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alleluia!, 18 Mar 2009
By M. Allen - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cantatas (Haim, Dessay) [CD + DVD] (Audio CD)
Once again Natalie shows us that she really can sing. Whether or not you choose to believe her voice is 'ruined' after suffering from vocal nodules, I believe Natalie has made a full recovery. Her voice is still in top form and remains one of (if not the) best sopranos of our time.

That combined with one of my favorite composers? Sheer ecstasy. The music is top notch, and so is Ms. Dessay's vocals.

For those who are either fans of classical, Bach, Natalie or just want some beautiful music to play while trying to focus, this album is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars New light over Bach's Cantatas, 18 May 2009
By Antonio Mustaros - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Bach - Cantatas Nos 51, 82a and 199 (Audio CD)
Here at last, the best recording available of this well known cantatas. The transparence, clarity and angelical beauty of the voice of Natalie Dessay shines gloriously by the marvellous job of direction of Emmanuelle Haïm and her superb orchestra Le Concert D'Astree. In this recording, as she did previously in the astonishing Louis Langree's version of Mozart's Mass in C minor, Dessay is too far from the Opera world, giving the definitive proof that she can sing baroque music with a contained voice, minimun vibrato and a great understanding of this Bach's masterworks.

Just listen to some samples of the recording and I'm sure that You buy it as fast as you can and start to live in the divine creations of Bach.
