BIS 991; BIS - Svezia; Classica vocale sacra Cantate

Amazon.co.uk

This first-rate album is volume 11 in the Bach Collegium, Japan's exhaustive survey of the Cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach. The choral performances on this disc are very fine, and soloist Midori Suzuki sings better German than many European and American artists, resulting in articulate and committed music making. The highly informative booklet is written by the conductor Masaaki Suzuki, himself also an accomplished organ and harpsichord player who is concurrently recording the complete Bach harpsichord music for BIS. The Bach Collegium, Japan was formed in 1990, with the express purpose of introducing high-quality "authentic" performances of baroque music to a Japanese audience largely unfamiliar with the repertoire. In only a decade they have achieved great international acclaim, producing some of the most exciting Bach recordings of recent years, including a rewarding Magnificat. The four Cantatas here--BWV136, BWV138, BWV95 and BWV46--were written for church services in Leipzig and first performed between 18 July and 12 September, 1723. None are especially well known, but Bach's immense musicality and invention make them essential listening nevertheless. --Gary S Dalkin

Impossible to better this one. 20 Mar. 2000
By Michael Pak - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
One of the best cantata disks yet to appear. Have you listened to the pizzicato aria in BWV 95? ("Ach, schlage doch bald") Also, the greatest ever baroque oboe player, Marcel Ponseele is on this disk, who further raises the listening experience to awsome heights...
Bach: Cantatas, Vol 11 (BWV 136, 138, 95, 46) /Bach Collegium Japan · Suzuki 12 Dec. 2010

Bach: Cantatas, Vol 11 (BWV 136, 138, 95, 46) /Bach Collegium Japan · Suzuki is a recording under the direction of Masaaki Suzuki who leads the Bach Collegium Japan on NEC and Lufthansa German Air recording from 1999. Being a huge fan of Bach listening to this amazing series of Bach recordings is true bliss and once more Suzuki has created an amazing recording. Peter Kooij is tremendous and his performance is truly astounding. Highly recommended. 5/5.

excellent performance 19 Oct. 2007
By HSIEH CHENG CHUNG - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
In summary my thoughts on this set, I feel BWV95 and BWV46 are both excellent better, the former is that it's a seldom cantata that shows more theatricality, it's differnt with others, Suzuki and Sakurada perform good, but not to let us worry their background is far away the west culture.
The latter is on the contrary, Kooiji show warm voice and Wessel perform his outstanding range of voice.
These are different style and express Bach music diversification, so that you also should try it if you are a lover of bach.

Suzuki's Cantatas suck! 11 Mar. 2013
By Palmist - Published on Amazon.com

Thin, precise, and happy. The tracks in BWV 95 overlap such that the movements are ruined at the end. Disappointed in the shortage of soul. The Dutch & Germans do indeed do Bach better.
