Format: Audio CD
This is an excellent disc which brings together some of the fabulous instrumental movements from Bach's cantatas - many of them sinfonias from which the disc takes its title. There are well over 200 cantatas and many are not performed or broadcast all that often, so much of the music here doesn't get the attention it deserves and I'm delighted that this disc has made it more accessible.

The music itself is top-quality Bach, which means it is simply wonderful. It is varied from the quietly beautiful to the joyfully celebratory with a sense of dance never far away. As you would expect of Bach, quite a lot of it is recycled and re-orchestrated from his other works so some familiar tunes pop up in unfamiliar guises. For example, the disc opens with the Sinfonia from BWV 26, an amazing orchestration of the delightful Preludio from the E major solo Violin Sonata and later from BWV174 we get the first movement of Brandenburg Concerto No.3, richly embellished with brass and winds. Other old favourites crop up throughout the disc. The whole thing is a delight and the variety and intelligent programming means that you can play the disc from start to finish without it ever feeling same-y or too much of a good thing as sometimes happens with compilations like this.

Accademia Bizantina are terrific. They give the music exactly the right degree of bounce and zing where needed and real delicacy and spirituality in the more meditative movements. It's exemplary Bach playing and the recorded sound captures it excellently.

In short, this is a cracking disc, and very warmly recommended.

Stunning exuberance throughout this disc; the energy is remarkable, it is best played loud! A crowd of different voices, from organ through various strings to trumpet are all keen to get involved in this compelling selection of excerpts from the cantatas. These lesser known pieces from J.S. Bach are a welcome addition to my Bach collection.

Every track a winner! Can listen to it over and over again. The arrangements keep to the Bach style and idiom, showing the mathematics of the man.
