Book Description

1 July 2000
The Baby Shapes Book and Mobile Set has been developed by The Children's Project and supports principles established in The Social Baby. There is continued debate as to whether or not new babies are able to distinguish colour, but it is agreed that they are drawn to high contrast images. These simple books are specially developed to interest a baby and they respond to these books from birth. Baby Shapes one and two, use very simple (through to more complex) bold graphic shapes. Baby Shapes three consists of a range of faces and facial expressions. New babies may copy some of the expressions. Baby Shapes four develops the graphics theme, introducing simple everyday objects such as a cat and a dog. The books bring the parents and their new baby together in a shared visual experience, nurturing the important beginnings of reading and turning the pages of a book. The mobile is unusual as it presents exciting visual images that can be viewed (importantly) by the baby when lying down as well as an adult.

From the Publisher

A great value for money pack that really does work. There is very little like this on sale and it is surprising how even newborn babies are fascinated by both the books and the mobile.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant! 16 Nov 2005
Format:Paperback
I bought this for my nephew - unfortunately it was put away in a box and forgotten about! A year later, my week old baby loves it!! She is now almost 7 weeks old and we can now tell what shapes she likes and dislikes! It's great to provoke and recognise a reaction in such a young baby - it has strenghtened the bond as we can play and read together. Well worthwhile!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing and fun! 23 Jun 2008
Format:Paperback
I bought this along with Faces (Babys very first book) after reading reviews on amazon, because I wanted to find something that would interest my very young baby. Well these books are great. Baby absolutely loved them, especially book 3 with all the faces. So simple, but he absolutely loved it and it was so funny to watch all his little expressions and cooing noises as he stared at the pictures. This is a must for young babies and I have recommended it to all my friends!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 25 July 2008
By Clare
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I recently purchased this set and I am extremely happy with it. My baby is only 6 weeks old but he responds really well to the pictures in the books and to the mobile. The 4 books contain simple shapes and faces that are either white on black or black on white and the mobile is very easy to put together - I have actually hung the mobile parts off the arches on the baby gym so that he can look at them whilst he plays.
The books could also be used as flash cards when he gets older with the name of the shape or object written underneath.
This item was a really good price too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coulour is Dead, Long live Black n White!! 20 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a great little set, the mobile seems cheap and tacky especially if you've forked out loads on the nice coulourful ones but that doesn't seem to bother baby, she loves it. Don't get me wrong she doesn't laugh and smile at it but we've placed it over the changing table and sometimes she will not settle when changing but now as soon as she's under it she's transfixed. it's lovely just to watch her entranced with it!
The books are great as well, 4 of them and each one becomes a little more detailed. Again she will stop all wriggling and whining when faced with the pages of this book, I look forward to when she can actually vocalise and show her reactions that way.
Do not be put off by the fact it's all black and white, it may seem poor to us but to baby it's a wonder!

4.0 out of 5 stars superb! 1 May 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I didn't believe the reviews at first as I couldn't believe my one week old baby could possibly see the shapes and respond to the mobile - was i wrong! Nappy changing times would normally be all about tears but that all changed the minute I set up the mobile abaove her changing table. A COMPLETE GODSEND and so amazing how she could make out the shapes and follow them with her eyes. I keep a book in my handbag for days out to keep her pacified as well. She loves it!
Downside is that the mobile is quite flimsy and one bit already ripped off and I've had to hold it together with sello tape.

5.0 out of 5 stars my 2 week old baby loved it!!! 8 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
After receiving this gift from a friend, I was skeptical about my 2 week old focusing on anything, let alone pictures in a book. Well, I was amazed!!! My 2 week old spent a few minutes staring at the images. I then cut the book up and placed the pictures strategically around the house, for tummy time, next to the changing mat and in the hood of the pram. The smiley faces accompanied us everywhere we went in the pram and my baby became so familiar with the faces he would squeal and laugh out loud whilst spending a long time staring at them. I have since bought the set of books as a gift for various friends and would highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for any new parent!! 25 Sep 2008
Format:Paperback
I bought this for the books but the Mobile was by far the best!

It looks a bit flimsy but I set it up *Tied it to a coat hanger* and used it all around the house (Hanging it on lightshades), especially when the baby had colicy moments, I'd spend the witching hours of the evening spinning it and baby just stared at it - worked till he was 6 months old!

I have bought one for every new mum I know and they have all said it is the daddy! I'm just about to buy one now for my cousin!

4.0 out of 5 stars great mobile. good books but for older babies than suggested
the mobile really entertains my baby. however, books are not really for the age suggested, having used them with my baby a bit older than suggested.
