5.0 out of 5 stars a good book 12 Feb 2010
By Alicja
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought the book based on some good reviews and Im not dissapointed. It is rather thin, but reads well, have quite a few interesting ideas and explains the use of particular toys. I thought I wouldn't be bothered with all these expensive mirror toys, crinky books etc, but having read about how they stimulate a child Im going to buy a few and give it a try.The book also explains what a child is capable of doing each month of their life, which for me as a first time mum, was not so obvious.Glad I bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book 23 July 2009
By LGG
Format:Paperback
This is a great book with loads of info about how your baby develops and plenty of ideas on what will appeal to them during each month. I didn't follow the golden hour concept but used the suggested games in play times throughout the day. Definitely good value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baby Skills book review 8 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
I do like this book, although sometimes find it difficult to navigate to the appropriate pages. I think it should be used as a guide and not to be completely relied upon as some of the skills seem unrealistic for a baby of a particular age. Overall an interesting read but don't get too hung up on what it says.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for first time parents 27 Aug 2008
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I stumbled across this book - and loved it. Very helpful at pointing out what your baby will be doing at the various monthly stages - and very useful ideas about what you can do to entertain/educate/play with your child. I was quite a nervous - and completely untrained - first time parent and found Dr Stoppard's book full of excellent examples of things to do with my son. I ignored the whole 'golden hour' suggestion by the author but still found it by far the most helpful book out there.

This book has extremely large font in order to fill the pages. The information is so basic it could quite easily have been conveyed in an information booklet and not a book. If you know nothing about baby's skills, for example what 'motor' development means then perhaps it is useful but generally provides no indepth insight into the developmental milestones of a baby's first skills. From a psychological perspective it is limited. However, it does provide some farily good activities to play with baby at different ages which are quite easy to extend on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 15 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
V informative book. Used this book for both my daughter & son who have very different personalities. Plenty of game ideas suited to your growing childs needs. Each chapter is split month by month & includes games which cover the mind, friendliness, talking, moving, & hands. A great guide.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit simplistic 27 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
I was a bit disappointed as I was expecting something a bit more substantial, and I find the navigation of the book a little impractical but overall it's ok the activities seem good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baby's First Skills by Miriam Stoppard 2 Sep 2009
By Jemalo
Format:Paperback
I bought this book for my daughter, who has just had her first baby. I enjoyed reading it before giving it to her and was facinated with its contents.
My daughter was thrilled with the book and began activities suggested the next day! My little grand daughter is loving it.
The book deals with the first year of life. The contents is clearly written with attractive illustrations and discusses a baby's milestones, all be it small to begin with. It suggests short and fun activities to stimulate your baby in a variety aspects of development. There are also details of how these activities can be expanded as your baby grows.
If you are a first time Mum, or a doting Gran, you will not regret buying this book.
