Biography

"When Darnielle put most of these songs to tape in 1999, even to his fans he seemed like someone who’d end up a committed but obscure lifer on the indie cassette circuit; it was hard to imagine there’d ever be a wide audience for the kind of eccentric, homespun music he was making. But remember: people underestimated Jeff and Cyrus, too." — Pitchfork, Best New ... Read more in Amazon's Mountain Goats Store

5.0 out of 5 stars you won't go wrong with this 25 Mar 2009
By tallmanbaby TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
The Mountain Goats are very prolific and their output is accordingly decidedly variable.

If you are coming new to the Mountain Goats then this is an ideal place to start, some beautiful lyrics, attractive tunes, and fairly conventional/professional production. Three of of the tracks, Sometimes I still feel the bruise, Alibi and Ox Baker Triumphant are amongst my all time favourite songs, but the whole EP is decided strong. This is music you can both admire and enjoy.

Highly recommended!

Random Lyrics

I will rise from the swamp
Where they dumped my private plane
I'll be clutching the life preserver
In my teeth
And I will find the highway
And I will flag down a truck

4.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Music Effort 29 May 2008
By William Hoffknecht - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
So when The Mountain Goats went on tour through Australia during the "Get Lonely" tour, they released this 5 track e.p. and it is good.
There is a cover of "Sometimes I Still Feel The Bruise" by Trembling Blue Stars that is quite wonderful as well as the song "Alibi", which is lyrically awesome.
Overall, good tunes and none of these tracks are available on any other tMG release, so check it out.
I am not sure if it is quite worth the 18 bucks or whatever Amazon wants for it. You can buy it for much cheaper if you DL it from iTunes. I would say LD it from Amazon, but for some reason they do not seem to have it, at least not at this time.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites in a long discography 20 May 2008
By Christopher J. Thompson - Published on Amazon.com

Every song on this is beautiful. The opener and his cover of "Sometimes i Still Feel The Bruise" are some of my absolute favorites in this artists long history. For me, this EP is The Mountain Goats at the top of their game.
5.0 out of 5 stars Just wanted to talk 13 July 2014
By Ryan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I was 16 when I first heard the mountain goats, or was it 15? I can't remember. It wasn't this EP though, I'm just writing my thoughts here. I remember driving and just listening to music. CDs in the disc changer, 6 mixes of the mountain goats. My best friend in the seat next to me as we talked of world domination and what we wanted for lunch that day.

I remember it was alibi that was playing when I told him I was going to ask his sister out, and his reply that it wasn't a good idea. It was the mountain goats that was there when it fell apart, and the condescending attitude if my friend to remind me that he'd told me so.

When I drove 2000 miles to go to my aunts funeral it was the mountain goats playing on shuffle that kept my company though the wastes of Nevada, the empty and frozen plains of Wyoming, the badlands of the Dakotas. When I moved from one coast to the other, the mountain goats were one of the few things I could take with me from home. An old blanket you can wrap around yourself to bring a little comfort. Unlike the old ratty pink blanket I had as a child though, these songs will never become threadbare and worn. So I wonder what other adventures I can have that the mountain goats will be a soundtrack to.

I don't know why I wrote all if this, I just wanted to say it to somebody is all.

5.0 out of 5 stars sparkling, intelligent, fun 14 April 2006
By Charles R. Watson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
this is only my second tMG CD and I am beginning to think John Darnielle is a real genius. Brilliant sound and amazing lyrics. His bassist Peter is extraordinary too. I saw them in Perth WA last night performing a couple of these songs. It was one of the best concerts I have ever heard.

Buy it even if you have to import it from Australia.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Darnielle's best 16 April 2006
By MM - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I have heard just about every song that John Darnielle has ever produced, and although I'd take John Darnielle's early work any day over his last few CDs, I still looked forward to hearing this EP. After listening to it about ten times, I'm still not quite sure what I think. Like many of Darnielle's songs, the songs grow on you, and you really start to love them after you know them forward and backward. "Ox Baker Triumphant" caught my attention right away, and it could be a great song, but the guitar work sounds incredibly similar to "This Year." Less is more for Darnielle. This CD, like The Sunset Tree, is simply too polished. The lyrics on all the songs are solid (much better than "The Sunset Tree," in my opinion), but the best parts of his muisc--the cracks in his voice and raw emotion and intensity that you can find in his earlier work--are missing. Darnielle is at his best when it's just him, his guitar, and his tape recorder.
