Product Description

The spectacular space epic continues, as the techno-mages face the growing threat of the Shadows . . .

As Elric and his student Galen watch with taut anticipation, dragons, angels, and shooting stars rain from the sky, heralding the arrival of the techno-mages on the planet Soom. It's the first time Elric-a member of the ruling Circle-has hosted such a gathering, and if all goes well, Galen and the other apprentices will emerge triumphant from the grueling initiation rites, ready to embrace their roles as full mages among the most powerful beings in the known universe.

But rumors fly of approaching danger and Galen and his young lover, Isabelle, are chosen to investigate the dark tidings. An ancient race has awakened after a thousand years, thirsty for war, slaughter, and annihilation. Will the techno-mages be the deciding factor in the war ahead? Or the first casualties?

I was sceptical when I heard the third trilogy of B5 books was going to be about the techno-mages as I feared there wouldn't be much of a story with the end result of their solitary appearance in The Geometry Of Shadows, but I was wrong. There is more to the techno-mages than could be imagined.

Jeanne Cavelos has written a fantastic piece of fiction which manages to be examine the events of the first season of Babylon 5 from the point of view of the techno-mages. The central characters Galen and Elric are exceptionally well written and Cavelos ensures that they are true to their television personas but developed more for the novel. The character of Isabelle, hinted at in the Crusade episode The Well of Forever, is a well created character and there's even an appearance by the sinister Mr. Morden as well.

This is an excellent book. Although it doesn't feature any of the main characters from B5, it weaves it's own strong story which is a delight from start to finish.

I have followed B5 from the beginning and am still of the opinion that it is the best sci-fi series ever written. Hence any chance to return to the universe and its characters is always welcome. Crusade was a let down, but one character who was interesting was Galen. This book follows his story from when he is initiated to become a mage. The story is well written and hangs together well. The part at the end when ...... nearly made me cry and I felt a little sick with sadness. Such was the writers ability to draw you to the characters and make you care what happens. It all ties very well within the B5 universe as you would expect when JMS has set the guidelines. I cannot wait for the next two books!!!!

I would have to say that i did enjoy this book, even if it was a bit slow and boring in places(1st half seemed to drag in places, second is non stop thrills), I just LOVED the intro about Anna and the shadows it really seemed to bring them alive in a way that the TV show failed to do (and they were amazing in that).

The characterisations were good if a little dry at times, I would have loved to see more of some of the other Technomages esp Blaylock and Alwyn.

I have given this book 4 stars not 5 because of those boring parts at the begining and the fact that non of the TMs outside the main cast seemed to be anymore than cardboard cutouts.

If you are a fan of the B5 world then this book is a must and if you not WHY NOT?
