Stylish safety gate 26 Jan 2010
This safety gate was easy to assemble. It is easy to use. It looks great too! It can be extended with extension pieces for wider doorways. Highly recommended.

Overall, this is a brilliant pressure gate with one small, potentially fatal flaw. First the good bits: It looks very nice, especially if you have wood floors. More importantly, the pressure indication system works very well: if you can see red then the gate is not fitted safely, if you can see yellow then it needs to be fitted with the mounting cups. This is very useful if you have a old Victorian staircase, where a safety gate can simply push the newel sideways and not actually pressure fit safely. The extension kits are also very good and can significant differences in width at the top and the bottom.

Now, the (very) bad bit. The problem relates to the small button that locks the lever down: some either do not work properly from new, or they deteriorate very fast. On the first Avantgarde gate we got the button never worked properly and our 14 month old could push the handle up from the bottom. The item is not a spare part available from BabyDan (showing an inexcusable lack of forethought on their behalf) so we sent the whole gate back. The replacement gate works perfectly, indicating that this is (or was) a quality control issue at BabyDan.

If you need a pressure gate I still think this is a very good option, just check very carefully to make sure the button feels robust and secure on the one you get and replace it pronto if you get a duff one.

I have 3 of these gates, and was happy with them for quite a long time - they're well adjustable, sturdy and easy enough for an adult to open.

Unfortunately the little button that you press to open the gate seems to be easily broken, though - in such a way that it pings out and can be easily eaten by babies and small children.

I contacted Baby Dan to find out whether spares are available - the problem is that the button wears if you don't press it just right when opening the gate, and so over time becomes more and more prone to popping out. So, you'd think it would be easy to get spares. Sadly, it turns out that NO PART of this gate is replaceable, which seems a bit crappy. I'll have to buy a different stairgate rather than continue with a dangerous one.
