Mealtime can be the most precious time of the day for a family; it can also be the most challenging. It is also a fact that the most common injuries for small children are fall-related injuries. The majority of products that are involved in fall-related injuries include Highchairs and changing tables. At the beginning of the 21st century, the Swedish Consumer Agency practically asked us to develop a safe Highchair where children couldn’t stand up (and fall out).

It is easy for parents to lift baby out of the chair.

The foldout table also works as an ingenious safety lock.

The table is adjustable to fit snugly against the child’s body and has smooth surfaces to minimize mess.

We started to study different Highchairs and children in Highchairs at mealtimes. Our findings were:

• Most children did not like to be strapped down with a harness.
• The Highchairs on the market are too big for a 6 month old and do not give proper support.
• A parent had to lift the child up high to get the child in and out of the Highchair.
• After the meal, the Highchair usually looked a mess and was difficult to clean. Food tended to get stuck in the harness, or on the cushion, in difficult- to- reach corners of the Highchair.
• Most Highchairs are big and bulky and difficult to store away.

Our findings resulted in a prototype that we started to test both with families and paediatricians. In order to keep the children from standing up and falling out we made a foldout, adjustable table and the results of the tests showed us this was important. The Highchair table also acts as a safety lock, as it holds the child securely in place with no need for a harness. A curved back support and adjustable and corresponding shell-shaped table ensured that the child was sat comfortably and securely with proper support. The design made it very easy for parents to place the child in the Highchair and to take him or her out, involving no high lifting. To make it easy to clean we provided the Highchair with easy-clean surfaces and a detachable tray that can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher. We made sure it would protect against spills by making the table adjustable to fit snugly against the child’s body. We also made the Highchair very easy to fold down and store away.

Children are by nature curious and ready to learn. The Highchair was therefore constructed so that it allows the child to sit with everyone else at the table. That way the social and linguistic development is stimulated and it is easier for the child to learn to eat and drink for him or herself - and have a good time doing so.
