Book Description

1 April 2012
When Mr. and Mrs. Deer find a little antlered bundle on the doorstep, Mrs. Deer thinks their wish for a baby has come true; Mr. Deer thinks that the baby is very, very peculiar. It won't stop roaring, so they ask advice from friends and family, who in turn send them off to fetch what they think the baby needs. But each time Mr. and Mrs. Deer return home from an errand, someone is missing and the baby is still roaring. It takes wise old Granny Bear to spot the problem. The baby's not a baby - it's a little monster! A very hungry monster at that. . . .

About the Author

Simon is the author of The Baby That Roared. He had a peripatetic childhood (New Zealand, Trinidad, Australia, England, Barbados plus stopovers a-go-go), which seems to have induced in the adult version a tendency to sit tight. But he lives in Edinburgh, so there are mountains of things to see and do on his doorstep - almost literally in the case of mountains themselves. He studied English Literature at Newcastle University, which has come in handy for him not so much as a writer as as a reader (fantastically clumsy but legitimate use of a double 'as'). Simon has written several books before, and hopes to write many more - though not too many, he says: just the right number... whatever that may turn out to be. Nadia is the illustrator of The Baby That Roared and thinks she was always destined to draw for a living. While growing up in leafy, sheepy Shropshire, Nadia would doodle on the back of her school exercise books. While studying in hilly, steely Sheffield she doodled all over her law degree notes. Then for nine years, in exciting, crowded, stinky London, she doodled on the back of big sheets of paper while working as a journalist on a wide range of magazines, including pop music bible Smash Hits. It was when she was working for Smash Hits that she began an evening course in children's illustration, and then in 2007 she took doodling to new heights by starting an MA in children's book illustration at Cambridge School of Art, where some kindly people suggested that she stop saying 'doodling' and start saying 'drawing'. Nadia lives in London with her husband, where she enjoys listening to music, planning what to cook for dinner, shuffling around in big furry slippers, watching films and fantasising about owning a hypo-allergenic cat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quirky book!! 23 Jan 2013
By JL120
Format:Paperback
I bought this book for my 5 year old when it came out after spotting it in the book shop, and nearly a year on - we are still enjoying it! This is a fabulously funny quirky story about a deer couple who adopt a baby which turns out to be a monster! It's very well written, I love the authors style - and the illustrations are great. My son and I find this book amusing every time we read it.

I particularly like this book because it is a bit different from the usual talking animal style of book which the picture book market is awash with and I personally think is rather bland - it's quirky, funny, well written and beautifully illustrated. I would definately recommend this book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars So much fun :) 11 Oct 2012

I read this to my son this afternoon and he loved it. The illustrations are beautifully executed, and the story is a delight to behold, even though it's all blatantly obvious what's going on to the reader. In fact, that just serves to make it even funnier. A lovely book, blessed with slightly grotesque humour which kids lap up. A must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still giggling 24 Aug 2012

So well written, with rhythm to bounce along to, and building to a climax with a wonderful twist. I have read this aloud to my teenage son and we both chuckled. The illustrations are a delight, and the dastardly baby is a masterpiece of naughtiness. And there is plenty of scope for a good "Roooaaarr" to increase the drama!
