Amazon.co.uk Review

Baby Van Gogh is from the award-winning infant-developmental media company Baby Einstein, whose goal and philosophy is the satisfaction of a child's curiosity through sight and sound. In the main Theatre section of this disc you'll find lots of simple shapes, primary colours and favourite toys passing across the screen. Unlike the simpler earlier releases, this is focused on the works of Vincent Van Gogh, who is here represented by a blue sock puppet! To begin with the video seems like something of a nature documentary with flowers in bloom and animals on the move, before we're taken through the colours of the rainbow with sections devoted to the individual colours. For example in Yellow, there are toy chicks, sunflowers, lemons and children playing in yellow paper shavings. All the while, The Baby Einstein Music Box Orchestra play us music from Van Gogh's era such as The Blue Danube Waltz, The William Tell Overture, Swan Lake and Flight of the Bumble Bee. This is a slight advancement in expectation of your child from the more basic initial releases but has a Video Tutorial to help the parent understand how it all works.

On the DVD: Baby Van Gogh is the name of the feature itself, but from the Main Menu you can enter a Concert Hall to replay the musical cues from the main show. There's also an Art Exhibit of each of the featured Van Gogh paintings, a Resources section with the aforementioned Video Tutorial and a Toy Chest crediting all the toys used, just in case a certain someone wants one of their own. --Paul Tonks

Baby Van Gogh 14 July 2003
By A Customer
Format:DVD
I have purchased many products from the Baby Einstein company - my son is enthralled with them, and therefore so am I! Baby Van Gogh is a visual and aural feast and I am delighted with the main content of the DVD. The introduction, however, sets my teeth on edge. Someone has had the bright idea of dubbing the US spokepersons with dubious English accents. It doesn't work, it doesn't fool anyone and it simply taints the credibility of the product. The erudite founder of the company (who we have met in the former videos) now looks as though she is being worked by a poor ventriloquist. Keep the products coming, Baby Einstein company, but sack the sound director!

Another great video from Baby Einstein. In this one, Vincent Van Goat (!) presents colours. The English version is dubbed perfectly well, but in any case, there are very few spoken words - just the name of each colour as it comes up (unlike Baby Shakespeare, which has lots of speech).

The puppet shows in this one are particularly funny.

I think this is one of the best of the series (although, based on reviews on this site, I haven't bought Baby Newton or Baby Bach as they seem to get bad write-ups).

I also recommend Babies Mozart, and Shakespeare, and Neighbourhood animals. Beethoven was fine, just not such a hit with my baby.

super value for money 27 Sep 2005
By A Corke

We bought this DVD on recommendation and have not regretted it one bit. Bethany was only a few weeks old when we first played it but it got us through the grizzly times in the evenings as she enjoyed the music and colours. Now she is 9 months old and tries to grab things as they move and moves along to the music. she giggles at things and we watch it a couple of times a week before bed. The music is varied and images change at a good pace. We have since given it to friends as a gift for their baby and they too have loved it. we have tried others in the range but this seems to be the best one.

12week old loves it
Bought this for my 12 week old and it keeps him occupied for around 10 - 15 mins, enough time for mr to have a shower or do some tidying. Well worth the money.

Maybe not aimed at my age group (I'm 35) but I love it!
OK, just to clarify I did not buy this item for myself. It's for my 4 month old niece. However, this recommendation is based on the copy I bought for our son about a year ago. Read more

Great for Infants and Adults alike
I watched this some years ago with my first kid, and actually found it quite relaxing. It withstands repeated viewing and would be even better in 3D. Top stuff.

Dreadful
The name 'Einstein' implies there's something intelligent about this series. And the reputation of Walt Disney made me assume it would be a work of quality. Read more
