Product Description

Fronting up at a lab with a jar of your DNA under your arm is no one's idea of a good time. But getting intimate with a yellow-lidded plastic jar is just one of the things a man's gotta do when the doctor thinks his swimmers might be sluggish. Jason Davis always thought that he and his wife, Liz, were going to have kids. All she had to do was go off the Pill and they'd be knee-deep in ankle-biters in no time, right? After all, they were fit and healthy, had a good marriage, good jobs, and lived in baby-stroller central. How hard could it be? After trying fruitlessly for almost a year, countless visits to GPs and specialists, and a battery of tests revealed that kids were 'probably never going to happen'. IVF was the next step. But what perils lurk behind that innocent little acronym? Baby Steps is a funny, heart-warming and unflinchingly honest story of expectations and frustrations, pain and joy, hopes and fears. And all the things two crazy kids will do to bring a third into the world.

I bought this book for my husband as we're looking at the potential of needing IVF in order to start a family - and this appeared to be the only book telling the story from a guy's point of view. However, with no reviews nor not being able to see a copy beforehand in a bookshop, we really had no idea what to expect.

The IVF related chapters are interesting although as he and his wife are based in Australia, things may be a little different over there to how they are in the UK. And it was certainly good to know that like us, he doesn't rate the people skills of healthcare professionals particularly highly! However, I did feel that a larger proportion of the book than was necessary was devoted to his relationship with his mother, and I found myself skipping chunks just to get back to the IVF related story.

Would I have bought it knowing the above? Probably yes, although I would have been hesitant to do so. Is it an entertaining read? In parts, yes. Does it give any insight to the process that you don't already know? Probably not. It's not really informative enough and I think there's so much more that could have been said about the run up to the IVF treatment and the emotions involved. I'm giving it 3 out of 5 as it's not a bad book; it just could have been and should have been so much more.

My mum gave this book to my husband for Christmas as we will be embarking on IVF this year for the first time. It wont surprise most ladies to know that I read it in a day before my husband even glanced at it!
The couple in the book are in a similar situation to ours, he has low sperm count and she is mild POS. It was a roller-coaster with ultimately a positive ending which was what I needed to read at this time.
I suppose I was expecting it to speak to me for my husband and tell me things he was feeling and I suppose it does. There were no big revelations and It certainly doesn't go into any depth as far as her treatment goes which may not be useful to women, but then that is hinted at in the title - blokes eye view. Overall though I think it will be of some comfort to my husband to read another mans account of his feelings and I think that that was the authors intention. I will get him to review it when he has read it as I think it's a mans book and deserves a mans review.

I was very surprised that this book even has been published as they only had one IVF cycle which was successful...very annoying book to read if you have failed IVF cycles behind you.
