Biography

Originating at the turn of the 1980s as a leader of the lite-jazz movement, Everything but the Girl became an unlikely success story more than a decade later, emerging at the vanguard of the fusion between pop and electronica. Founded in 1982 by Hull University students Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt, the duo took their name from a sign placed in the window of a local furniture shop, which claimed ... Nice little Package for a simply sublime album from some very talented individuals. I saw the concert at The Albert Hall in 1986. Absolutely Incredible. Happiest most as production has not been altered and the sound has not been homogenised by so called re mastering. Fantastic Stuff.

This re-issue is everything you could ask for great packaging, hard to find tracks and with the bands involvement. Great!

As a longtime EBTG fan , i have collected everything they 've done so far ( and Tracey solo jobs too ) . So i find it pretty much like a rob getting this old new material packed in another format with some excuse bonus tracks and home demos . We bought the cassettes and vinyls in the eighties , the CDs of same in the 90s and we certainly don't need this ! EBTG have given so many concerts in their carrer and i only attended one of them ( Cologne 1996 , the live version of " Better Things " was brilliant ! ) because i was living until then in Algeria . I wish they would release some live concert like the one of the acoustic tour ( extra tracks on Missing : The Live EP ) . This was EBTG at it 's best . The " language of Life " tour has also brought great performances too. And this is really what the fans want and waited for at least 20 years. We're not gonna be fooled by WEA for this old stuff , that only brings sells of back catalogue . Also HD downloads would be fab . Tracey and Ben know how to do it from their independent recording experience .
So come on Ben and Tracey ! Do us this favour to your 50th Birthday this year . Or give a concert in London or better in Berlin , as we'd love it so much to see you live !

One of My Most Favorite EBTG Album's 6 Nov 2012
By W. Cullen - Published on Amazon.com

This re-issue is so impressive. The casebound book is gorgeous, the new liner notes and comments from Tracey and Ben give you a more personal insight into the record. This re-issue is worth it just for those minor things, but what really makes this AMAZING is the bonus disc of extra songs. B-Sides, Rarities, Non-Album singles, Demos, Live and Alternate versions make all Four of EBTG's albums with Sire (Blanco Y Negro) any collector's "must have" item.

Baby The Stars Shine Bright, and boy do they ever on this album. The full orchestra add something endearing to this glorious album. Come On Home is so lyrically perfect and heartbreaking. Don't Leave Me Behind makes you want to stop so you don't leave anything behind. Don't Let The Teardrops Rust Your Shining Heart is sweet and lovely. Little Hitler has such a great message and it's catchy tune will have you humming it all day if you aren't careful. This is one of my all time favorite EBTG albums and I recommend it to anyone and everyone and often too! It's Pop the way Pop should be.
Mike Hedges 8 Jun 2014
By R. Kinkade - Published on Amazon.com

With the great liner notes written by Ben and Tracey, I now have an explanation why this particular album always hurt my ears. They confess that Mike Hedges likes the 3 kHz frequency, and apparently that is the frequency that is overly boosted when this album was mastered. It gives the whole affair a very harsh 80's sheen that obliterates the normally organic, rounded sound most other EBTG recordings have. This whole deluxe series is worth buying. Nice packaging, and wonderful bonus material. In fact the home demos often outshine the studio masters, especially on this particular album.

This effort hints at the greatness to come.

EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL, NOT SWING OUT SISTER 21 April 2013
By Shriekman65 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is the very first Everything But the Girl album I bought. I was looking for Swing Out Sister. However, I did not know the name Swing Out Sister. I just knew what she looked like by her hairstyle. I saw Tracey Thorn on the cover of this album and mistook her for Corinne Drewery from Swing Out Sister. So, I bought the album. Everything But The Girl was one of the best mistakes I ever made. I Love Tracey Thorn's voice. This is a very good Album. My favorite tunes from Baby The Stars Shine Bright are Sugar Finney, Fighting Talk, Baby Come Home and Cross My Heart. I have to say that Cross My Heart is my all time fave from this cd. I get teary-eyed when Tracey sings "I hope we never die....". This album gets a five star rating because I love it and it was my introduction to one of my favorite groups. Everything But The Girl gets an A+ with Honors from me. Baby the Stars Shine Bright is a definite must have! Purchase it now. You won't be disappointed. EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL SHINES BRIGHT!

Baby the Stars Shine Bright is top 2 for me by Everything But The Girl 1 Feb 2013
By Mary Ann Rocco - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I discovered EBTG in 1986 when one rainy night we met this girl from Paris who popped in a beat up cassette copy of music that blew us all away. That cassette turned out to be EBTG's Eden. It wasn't available in the states, so I ordered the imported CD from Europe along with this one, Love Not Money and Tracy's solo Distant Thunder. As much as I LOVE Eden, I also love this release. If I play the first 4 tracks no matter what mood I'm in I will be singing at the top of my lungs and be in a higher mood, albeit a bit melancholy.

If I had to choose between Eden and this release I think I know which one I would pick, but I can't say for sure. I saw them live a few times after they were officially introduced in America. Is there anyone with a better voice than Tracy? I think not. She was and is enchanting. For me Baby the Stars Shine Bright was a show case for her vocals and it shined more brightly than any other release from EBTG. My love affair with EBTG ended with this release, or maybe the next one, Idlewild. I love electronica music but I wasn't captivated with the direction they took when I assume Ben took more creative control. I guess I would say that I love EBTG and I love house music but I didn't love them put together. Probably because I indentified EBTG with their earlier releases which were lyric driven vocal music.

Even though I still have the original CD I bought way back when I'm ordering this new one to hear the demos and the B sides. My recommendation is to BUY THIS IMMEDIATELY. I can't see how you would be disappointed.
