Families! Relationships...how do they become so complex? and yet on they go, mostly blind, because it's all they have...and what seems to evolve in the tale is the utter futile struggle to maintain fantasy, totally unaware of any other way. And the voice of the mediator and of reason in the arm of the law...almost a fable.

This is the first Inspector Ramsey book I have read. .........another good read. It took me a little while to "get to know" Inspector Ramsey but he did grow on me, a normal person with acceptable health difficulties.
Again Ann Claves has written an excellent read.

The Baby Snatcher was an OK read, i was kept interested but found i deduced who the snatcher was near the end.
After saying that, there were plenty of twists and turns along the way.
Generally i like Ann Cleeves novels.

I have now read all six Inspector Ramsay books, initially the two main characters, Ramsay & Hunter appeared at least to me lukewarm. As the characters evolved so did my enjoyment of the books. I love all the cameo roles that the author introduces from nebby neighbors to fun loving single mothers. All in one way or another essential to the plot.
Located in the gritty North East of England, the geography is described with total accuracy capturing the atmosphere of once vibrant villages, now languishing on the sidelines.
An excellent read

These books have got better as I've read them. The characters are clearly defined and realistic. The relationship between Ramsay, his sergeant and Sally, the policewoman works well. Each one of them has developed into a credible understandable person. The plot of the sixth book in the series unwinds with lots of twists and surprises. The conclusion is first call. Is this the end of the Inspector Ramsay stories? If so, it's a shame!

I have only just discovered Inspector Ramsey (God Bless Kindle) and am hooked. I suppose it is because there is no unnecessary swearing, very little sex but a very well thought out mystery. The characters and their behaviours are believable and recognisable to the general population. I cannot understand why this series was overlooked for a TV series. Perhaps because "Vera" had a more peculiar lifestyle.

Having read Vera and the Shetland series I thought I would try one of her earlier books recently made available on kindle. Although somewhat different, I found it to be a worthwhile read and will now go on to try another Inspector Ramsey.
