Product Description

From the author of Shetland and Vera

When fifteen-year-old Marilyn Howe turns up alone and frightened on Inspector Ramsay’s doorstep he has little choice but to invite her in. Marilyn and her mother, Kathleen, are a familiar sight around Heppleburn, a strangely inseparable couple. But Kathleen has unaccountably failed to return home that evening, and Marilyn is fearful for her mother’s safety.

Ramsay takes the young girl home, to the isolated coastal community known as the Headland. And in the Howes’ dark and cluttered kitchen they find Kathleen safe and apparently well, though acting rather mysteriously.

Six months later, Ramsay has more or less forgotten the strange incident, busy as he is on the trail of a local child abductor. Until he receives news that Mrs Howe has disappeared once more. And for the second time he is drawn into the strange relationships of the families living on the lonely Headland.

Then a woman’s body is washed up on the beach . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 5 Oct 2014

Families! Relationships...how do they become so complex? and yet on they go, mostly blind, because it's all they have...and what seems to evolve in the tale is the utter futile struggle to maintain fantasy, totally unaware of any other way. And the voice of the mediator and of reason in the arm of the law...almost a fable.

This is the first Inspector Ramsey book I have read. .........another good read. It took me a little while to "get to know" Inspector Ramsey but he did grow on me, a normal person with acceptable health difficulties.
Again Ann Claves has written an excellent read.

The Baby Snatcher was an OK read, i was kept interested but found i deduced who the snatcher was near the end.
After saying that, there were plenty of twists and turns along the way.
Generally i like Ann Cleeves novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read 6 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have now read all six Inspector Ramsay books, initially the two main characters, Ramsay & Hunter appeared at least to me lukewarm. As the characters evolved so did my enjoyment of the books. I love all the cameo roles that the author introduces from nebby neighbors to fun loving single mothers. All in one way or another essential to the plot.
Located in the gritty North East of England, the geography is described with total accuracy capturing the atmosphere of once vibrant villages, now languishing on the sidelines.
An excellent read

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the series 31 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
These books have got better as I've read them. The characters are clearly defined and realistic. The relationship between Ramsay, his sergeant and Sally, the policewoman works well. Each one of them has developed into a credible understandable person. The plot of the sixth book in the series unwinds with lots of twists and surprises. The conclusion is first call. Is this the end of the Inspector Ramsay stories? If so, it's a shame!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail for Readers 20 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have only just discovered Inspector Ramsey (God Bless Kindle) and am hooked. I suppose it is because there is no unnecessary swearing, very little sex but a very well thought out mystery. The characters and their behaviours are believable and recognisable to the general population. I cannot understand why this series was overlooked for a TV series. Perhaps because "Vera" had a more peculiar lifestyle.

4.0 out of 5 stars The baby snatched ann cleeves 30 Aug 2013

Having read Vera and the Shetland series I thought I would try one of her earlier books recently made available on kindle. Although somewhat different, I found it to be a worthwhile read and will now go on to try another Inspector Ramsey.
