As an IVF patient, just embarking on stage 1, I thought I knew as much as there was to know about IVF, however this book provided me with a great balance of humour and fact. I learnt even more about the why, what, who and when !
Above all it made me realise that the feelings I am experiencing are perfectly normal, albeit mad ! Baby Roulette answered many of the questions I had but did not want to ask, lets face it the fertility teams are professionals not often patients.
I have asked my family and friends to read Baby Roulette as it perfectly describes how the behaviour of people around you can make you feel. My husband will also be able to relate to the hilarious sperm cupboard visits and Alex's approach to IVF.
Brilliant writing - addictive reading.
Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Desperate to conceive, they put themselves through a strict regime of sex and drugs that are variously snuffed and injected into poor Bella as she struggles to right her hormones! Against the backdrop of a busy career and a camp and dreadfully chauvenistic boss, who exists only because he is carried by his team, Bella's life revoles aroung her monthy cycles, fitting her treatment between a demanding job.
This is a story of a strong, single minded woman, taken outisde her sphere of control. Bella is exposed, in every sence of the word; riding her baby train rollercoaster with her supporting man's man of a husband Alex.
We are invited into their life and see the ovious underlying love between them and strength of their relationship, stretched to breaking point by the pressures of the IVF treatment.
Through all the stresses and straings, Watson imparts humour, several times i had to book down as i laughed out load, not something i expected with such a serious subject matter.
This book brought home to me the lengths that some people have to go to for a family and that love really does overcome and the importance of supporting friends.
Im a thirtysomehting single man, so perhaps not the market that the book was aimed at but I highly recommend it, its a darn good read, touching, funny and educational. I loved it!
