The Natural, No-Fuss, No-Purée Method for Starting Your Baby on Solid Foods

Baby-Led Weaning explodes the myth that babies need to be spoon-fed and shows why self-feeding from the start of the weaning process is the healthiest way for your child to develop. With baby-led weaning (BLW, for short), you can skip purées and make the transition to solid food by following your baby’s cues.

At about six months, most babies are ready to join the family at the kitchen table and discover food for themselves. Baby-Led Weaning is the definitive guide to this crucial period in your child’s development, and shows you how to help your baby:

  • Participate in family meals right from the start
  • Experiment with food at his or her own pace
  • Develop new abilities, including hand-eye coordination and chewing
  • Learn to love a variety of foods and to enjoy mealtimes

Baby-led weaning became a parenting phenomenon in the UK practically overnight, inspiring a fast-growing and now international online community of parents who practice baby-led weaning—with blogs and pictures to prove it! In Baby-Led Weaning, world-leading BLW authority Gill Rapley and early BLW practitioner and coauthor Tracey Murkett deliver everything you need to know about raising healthy, confident eaters.

About the Author

Bought that when my son was 5 months to get some ideas as to what he could eat. Very relaxed approach that will make you more laid back than gina ford (read it as well to see how the two differs!). Was a bit scared of baby choking but he has been fine eating bits of cucumber, breadsticks and strips of cheese. Am not a purist though and also doing purees and that works for him too (you can combine the two methods despite what they tell you in the book, it will make your life easier).

Downside are cleaning up bits of food on the floor all the time.... Plus side is that it takes AGES for baby to eat so whilst he munches on his carrot stick you can get on doing other stuff whilst keeping an eagle eye on him of course...Would read it if you want to get inspired, don't follow it religiously like any other childrearing book or you would only become more stressed!

I recommend the chapter on balancing out foods... basically saying that you don't really need to count what's going in in terms of protein carbs etc it will balance out in the end. Very interesting to know when Gina Ford says you have to measure out everything in baby boot-camp. Read baby led-weaning is like a holiday compared to her. But then again everything is.

This book is based on a collection of papers by Gill Rapley and Tracey Murket, I found it to be fascinating and enlightening. It is not intended to be and is not marketed as a 'guide to weaning', nor is it a recipe book (though there is a BLW recipe book on it's way). It's a book to offer another option to puree weaning; something which is not routinely offered to parents as they approach the 6 month mark. I was dreading weaning until I read this book! I have a very stubborn boy and I was positive that he would not take well to being 'fed' and that I woud not take well to blending masses of veg into a pulp and spooning it into a reluctant mouth. This book is not anti puree, more, anti the idea that babies 'have' to eat a certain number of meals, at a certain time, by a certain age. Unlike many other books, it is not accompanied by a mind boggling aray of possible products to buy - if you like the theory, you get on with it, with what you have in your house.
The testimonials are written by BLW parents and therefore as slightly one sided, however that's beacuse BLW is an amazingly refreshing way to wean - Puree isn't bad,but it isn't right for every baby just like BLW is fantastic, if it's right for you and your baby.
My book has been read a good few times and it's a keeper as far as I'm concerned.

Love BLW 26 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
My daughter is now 6 and a half months, we've been weaning for 2 weeks. I love baby led weaning. It's so easy, and it's great to watch her play with food. She has such a big smile, and is so proud of herself when she manages to swallow something - doesn't happen at every meal yet, but that's fine.

I'm pleased I read this book before I started weaning, as it explains the safety stuff. It is a bit repetitive, and a bit preachy (BLW will prevent your child having any issues with food, apparently)
I personally find it easier than making purees, and don't mind a bit of a mess (coverall bibs and wipe clean tablecloth on floor).

I've also bought the cookbook, and think that's good too.
