I bought this for a gift as it came highly recommended, and I had a quick flick through before I wrapped it. The few paragraphs alone that I managed to read at speed have been of immense help in improving the understanding and bond between me and my toddler. Being aware about the language used is of great benefit, and yet so subtle, such as not using 'the royal WE!' not saying 'ok' at the end of a request: such as I might previously have said 'we need to put your shoes on, ok?' with mixed results, I now say 'its time to put your shoes on' full stop which is much more likely to get the desired result as it has more impact and is more respectful to a toddler. Now its becoming increasingly common for everyone to happier (especially getting ready for the school run!)as there is no room for confusion as im no longer making it a question about things that need to be done. Im finding adopting he RIE practices to be massively beneficial to both my self and my kids and also to those around us. Highly recommended. I also recommend the author Pennie Brownlee.

Maybe babies do come with manuel! This book is it. 2 Feb. 2014
By DMG - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
At a point in our parenting culture where we are at extremes of either helicoptering or on the verge of neglect, this book offers an easy balance between the extremes. There are examples of how to enjoy diapering and avoid the humiliation of toilet training. There are examples of naps made easy, and terrific anecdotes about siblings, eating and how to establish routines that work for everyone. It's really quite profound in its simplicity. I think that what it's offering both the child and parent is a lifetime of honest interaction and resilience. Wow. It's really important information and the author has a light touch regarding very charged up topics. I think this book may be regarded as an irreplaceable baby bible for new parents now and for many, many decades. My passionate recommendation is read it before your baby comes and use as a resource as he/she grows into toddlerhood and beyond.

As close to a manual as you can get! 12 Feb. 2014
By Forrest Brakeman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Well, it's too late for my kids, I've already messed them up to the best of my abilities! But for parents with newborns and young-uns, Deborah Carlisle Solomon's book is a must have. Well-written, clear, concise and packed full of valuable information and deceptively straightforward techniques. Yes, you can raise a confident and resourceful child!

In hindsight, so much of what she suggests in Baby Knows Best turns out to be common sense, but because of our stressed-out lives, raising kids to compete and succeed in this ridiculously fast-paced and demanding world can quickly cause us to lose sight of what makes sense. And the lack of sleep tends to make you a bit of a parental zombie, prone to strange decisions.

Ms. Solomon does a wonderful job of grabbing your parental tether lines and bringing you back down to earth so that you and your baby can progress through the critical early years in a manner that benefits everyone.

I highly recommend this book. I only wish I could have read it many years ago.

The only child rearing book you need! 10 Feb. 2014
By Fielding Edlow - Published on Amazon.com

Deborah Carlisle Solomon's book is a perfectly laid out gift of a more peaceful, loving, nurturing way to raise a child. RIE has enabled me to slow down and really SEE and HEAR my child - to put spaces and pauses in our daily dialogue so I miss less and see more. It has helped relax me as a parent and help our entire family be more present in our daily lives. My daughter learned how to self-soothe in her crib and play by herself because of tips and gentle guidelines from Deborah. My daughter has only recently been speaking in full sentences but I feel we've been fully communicating since we first met...

not only for parents 7 Jan. 2014
By Gale Clark - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Love this book. It is beautifully written, and interesting to the non-parent as well as those in the throes... In addition to being a thoughtful approach to parenting, the principles outlined offer insight into the power of taking time to observe before reacting in all relationships. The thesis of Baby Knows Best is an interesting comment on how each of us can simplify and improve our relationships by assuming all individuals, as well as babies, are competent and can make good decisions.

This book is a breath of fresh air infused with a lot of breathing room! 27 Jan. 2014
By Sandra J Hopkins - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I work with children and their families and I love this philosophy and the practical applications it offers to new parents. As our world gets busier and busier and common, every day connections with others gets less and less, it is so important to slow down and connect in the present moment with those around us. Deborah has done a brilliant job of showing how to help create the building blocks for a child's sense of self and others to prepare them for a rich, meaning-filled, connected life. She also offers hope to overwhelmed parents so they can find joy in common, every day moments and feel more confident as a parent. I suggested this book to all my family members who have new babies, even the Grandparents.

I wish I had this book when my kids were babies!
