Product Description

There’s more to good and evil than meets the eye...

When human remains are found in her pre-war fixer-upper in an east Vancouver neighbourhood, Claire Dawson’s grand plans to fix the house—and her life—take a disturbing turn. Suspicious there might exist a relationship between the discovery and her own tragic past, Claire insinuates herself into the investigation, unknowingly placing herself in harm’s way and Homicide’s Detective Dylan Lewis in an impossible conflict of interest. And when Dylan’s grandmother, a Coast Salish medicine woman, wades into the mystery, challenging the demon whose earthly form is behind the murder, the three find themselves embroiled in a high-stakes battle where lines are blurred and worlds collide—but souls are ultimately freed.

Loved it. 7 Jun 2011
By TopCat TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
Lately I've read a couple of books that encompass elements of the supernatural or spiritual so I was interested to read the description of this book, which hinted at a crime thriller with a twist.

Claire Dawson is looking for a new start in the home she has brought for renovation. She has a past she is trying to get over but it doesn't look like things will go smoothly when she finds human remains within the walls of her house. Detective Dylan Lewis arrives to investigate and the two immediately find themselves unintentionally winding each other up. Claire is determined to give the victim the dignity of a name and decides to help the investigation along to ensure justice is served. The house has more secrets than just a body within its walls though, and when Lewis' grandmother Ta'ah, a Coast Salish medicine woman, hears about Claire's story she gathers the elders and goes to the property to deal with the demon within it. Claire's continuing involvement in the case brings her into repeated contact with Lewis and the sparks between the two are all too obvious, but the potential conflict of interest further complicates matters.

I loved this book and found it a compulsive page turner. The first chapter had me hooked, with plenty to read on for in order to answer a bunch of questions. Written in the third person the story is told from a few points of view, which allows the reader to get a good background and feeling for the main characters. I really liked Claire and Dylan, but at times wanted to bang their heads together. I also found the details of Ta'ah's role and beliefs fascinating. It has made me want to go away and read more about the Coast Salish people.

As far as the whodunit went the suspects were fairly clear early on, but the supernatural or spiritual element makes it stand out from a lot of other thrillers. I did wonder whether the presence of demons in the story might make it too far fetched for me, but actually in the context of the beliefs of the Coast Salish peoples it made it even more interesting. I also found the historical element, going back to what was happening in Germany before WWII, a clever element.

I'm not sure there is much I can give as a negative, it was well-paced, the main characters were well drawn and had a range of issues that made them flawed and human, and the plot had something to separate it from the crowd. I thought it was a great read and would happily recommend it!

A Good Who-Done-It With A Native American Spiritual Twist 2 April 2011

This book is an excellent reading experience and I would like to recommend it to any and all to purchase it.

All of Deemers' characters are both vibrant and real. Her attention to detail and character description makes them come alive and jump off the Kindle screen and into your dreams.

The plot of the book begins with Claire Dawson trying to pick up the remains of her shattered life and establish a new one in her new house that she plans to remodel. Fate has a way of intervening and as she begins to demolish the old walls she has no way of knowing that she is demolishing the walls that she has built up around her to protect her damaged psyche from its previous traumas and hold her heart in captive mysery.

As Claire tries to cope with the rapidly developing events that began to bombard her she finds herself drawn into a web of love and the conspiracy of NAZI evil that had crept into her quiet suburban locale and threatens to expose her innermost secrets and shame for the world to see.

With the help of an elderly neighbor she begins to investigate the circumstances that surround the death of an innocent baby. The deeper she digs the closer she unwittingly comes to being damned by an evil demon - the Jackal.

Her only other ally, Homicide Detective Dylan Lewis is put in an impossible situation between his duty as a police officer and his romantic attraction to the lovely and alluring Claire Dawson.

Little does he realize that the struggle for his heart's affection will not only duel it out in the temporal plane, but also in a netherworld filled with mystical beings and personas.

Reading this book had a natural flow and rhythm that made it one of those "hard to put down" stories that are so deliciously enjoyable to experience.

riveting page-turner 3 May 2011
By Julie Curtis - Published on Amazon.com

I agree with the other reviewers that this is a riveting page-turner of a book, but while the mystery was certainly intriguing, for me the book's strength is its ability to take a very familiar genre and take it to the next level by adding in unexpected elements.

I enjoyed the characters--just one of the strengths of this book--and appreciated how strong all the females are, from Ta'ah and her quiet authority and obvious influence on Dylan to his aunt Sylvie, with her wit and again her influence. In fact, what made Baby Jane such a fun read for me is how subversive its principle female characters are: these are strong, remarkable yet very realistically portrayed women whom I could admire and root for. And I appreciated how much Dylan respects these women and how writer Michelle Demers illustrates that respect both in subtle ways and through Dylan's obvious determination to find Baby Jane's killer, even at the expense of his personal desire for Claire.

Even Demers' minor characters are very vividly portrayed and do a great job of supporting the main characters and advancing the plot: Dylan's partner, Tom, provides wonderful comic relief, Armin is a formidable antagonist, Ben's relationship with Izzy is at once lovely and creepy and complex, Rafael initially seduces the reader just as he does Claire, Frau Muller is that classic nosy but lovable neighbour you come to adore despite yourself, while Jackal makes you want to sleep with the lights on.

I've been reading mysteries since my tweens (is anyone else out there a once-upon-a-time fan of Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys?) and in a genre that usually has some very specific rules to follow, it was a treat to find not only a terrific traditional mystery being revealed on each new page but also to experience elements of the fantastical through Ta'ah's First Nation's other-world travels. I really enjoyed the Native mystical elements, which reminded me a bit of Tony Hillerman's novels.

Adding to the mix of a great story and the interesting (and smart!) characters is the fact that Demers is a very visual writer. I found myself thinking the whole time I was reading it, "This would make a great movie." And I would recommend to Demers that she turn Baby Jane into a series featuring Detective Dylan Lewis. There are certainly enough interesting characters here to develop further.

Well done and highly recommended.

This was a very good story. I was very impatient to see what would happen. Even before I was half finished the book I was recommending it to people.
