5.0 out of 5 stars utterly delightful, 23 Nov 2008
By Holly Smith "Holly" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Baby in the Hat (Hardcover)
I must admit my bias as a fan of Ahlberg's many books for children, but this latest is a delight! Subtitled 'an early romance' it tells the unlikely story of a boy's adventures: from saving the baby of the title to cabin boy, mate, battles with pirates, captain and a romantic happy ending. Multiple voices are employed, the best friend narrating with occasional exclaimations 'it's true!' 'hurrah!' 'aye aye sir!' from mermaids, sailors and a dog. The text has all the vigour charm and rhythym of Alhberg's best books. While Amstuz has illustrated many of Ahlberg's books (such as the Skeleton series and Monkey Do) here his style is new to me, more painterly, employing beautiful colours drawing on a seaside palette.

My three year old daughter (after a visit to Portsmouth Historic Dockyards) remarked 'this book is about the time of Nelson' as the buildings, costumes and boats are so beautifully painted they give a real sense of the period. Actually the text refers to King William 1830s, but no one likes a precocious child, so please don't let that detract from my message; this book is so enjoyable that despite (very often) repeated reading I have still not tired of it, and my daughter knows it off by heart.
